Without the steering condition, go back to Keith's suggestion on ignition coil.  Look for signs of leakage on the under side of it.  Sounds like Keith is dead on.  It hits up and cuts out / cools off and runs again.

As an outside thought (and I mean way outside) check the resistance on the battery cables.  The computer feeds directly from the battery since it's more stable.  Maybe resistance is building?

I agree with checking the ignition module or coil assuming the steering doesn't lock up.  Keep us updated Pam

OK, a little more info please.  You said the steering locked up with you, and doesn't with your husband.  How many times did it lock up with you?  And did it lock up each and every time the motor died?  Just looking for a possible coincidence of some sort, not related to the motor stopping.  I hate the idea of throwing money at problems without knowing exactly what it is, but, the cost of a new coil is pretty minor, and would certainly eliminate that possiblility.  Keith

It's a 96 XJ6.  It has no ignition module and six coils.

6 coils?  OK, then I'd reconsider my last post, a little more checking then!

Correct.  Intstead of a distributer with wires, individual coils attach to each plug.

Ken, just wondering, going along with my first suggestion.  Maybe buy only one new coil, and try it in place of each "old" coil.  Still not the best solution, but, short of turning it over to a mechanic, might still be a cheaper way to go.

That's exactly how I tell people to replace them when there's a miss.  However, one bad coil won't kill the engine.  It will run like crap, but won't die.
