Hey, didn't realize this was going to be a trick question!  Geeez, how unfair is that, 3 problems, I have enough problem dealing with one!

OK, I'd hate to think anyone would be that unlucky!

Hey Pam
Have you or your tech checked front crank signal when fault occurs?
Getting to be a pretty know problem with these cars as they are getting older as car warms up sensors can and do fail  OC or below spec output to ECM
Ive had a few including my own 95 xj6 last year
took me awhile to figure it out and i am a Jag Tech   lol
Also P1621 ECM fault/failure is quit often caused by the ignition coils as they age and crack they begin  to arc to the cam cover spark plug holes
and in turn the ECM can be damaged from the spiking or grounding out of the coils
The price of new ECM if you can get at our dealer is close to 3 grand
Its kind of hit or miss on getting a good known ECM
Good luck and continue to keep us posted

Solved it!

I traced a previous owner who put me in touch with an old mechanic who used to service the car etc etc.

Net - we have replaced the Crank Shaft Sensor (cost £70) and the car has been running perfectly since.  Apparantly this is so common the guy I spoke to carries them as part of his 'kit'.  I'm not sure about that story but who cares.  I have my lovely car back on the road.

Thankyou all for your interest and your time.  I'll come back here first if I have any future problems.

Best regards
Pam
