Hi there, Forgive me if I use incorrect terminology, I am after all a girl - however I love my Jag! It is XJ6 2.3auto 96. I was driving along a straight road 50 mph and the revs just dropped to zero. The car started normally after 15 minutes and continued for another 10 minutes before the same thing happened. My garage guy has welded bits, mended bits, checked all sorts of electrical bits and finally after 2 months found fault code P1621 so I think relating to the immobiliser. I got a replacement 2nd hand ECU and this has been fitted but the car still cuts out after about 10 minutes and then wont start for 10 minutes. (i.e. same problem as before) Can anyone please help with what to check next? Many thanks

My code list skips P1621. Your description of symptoms is good. Sounds like something electrical is heating up and cutting out. Does it slowly die out or just cut off dead as though you turned the key off?

Hi Ken Thanks for replying. It is a completely instant stop as if the key had been switched off. Combined with the steering locking instantly aswell its a bit scary. Pam

Pam, have you inspected the wires from the ECU for cuts/corrosion as well as the connections themselves? Is the replacement ECU a known good one and an exact replacement?

Hi Michael, The garage guy checked all the wires on the original ECU with the result that the car started much faster! The replacement ECU is in even better condition and is from a reputable source. I think it is pretty unlikely that both of these ECUs have the same fault. My (very unknowledgable) feeling is to look elsewhere in the car. We have also checked the voltage to the fuel pump (injection or whatever) and that was still ok even after it cut out. Thanks for helping. Pam

I don't think it's that drastic. The steering locks only when the key is removed. By your description, I would change the entire lock assembly. I'm just guessing, but I would be the lock is bad and breaking all contact. It's telling the car to shut and lock the steering. It would be the only that that combines the two symptoms that I can think of.

Hello Keith, Ken at al, My husband is the only other person who regularly drives the car and he says the steering hasnt locked when it has cut out with him - so - any ideas based on this are also welcome. The guy who is looking at it isnt a Jag specialist but he is an electrical specialist. He still seems to think the problem is probably electrical. Many thanks Pam
