Well, my '04 XJ8 sedan has developed a droning noise. It starts around 55 mph and continues to about 70 mph; and then the sound kind of gets lost in normal road noise. The noise doesn't seem to be coming from the front or the rear in particular. And I can't detect any unusual vibrations in the steering, etc.

It started around 90K miles. I had the dealer check for wheel bearing and U-joint problems, and none were found. The Tech thought it might be the tires. So I have replaced them. I now have about 100K miles, and I think the noise might be getting a bit worse.

Oh, the noise is there whether the A/C is on or not. And road surfaces don't seem to matter.

Any ideas (please)?

Is it consistent between those speeds or does it change with speed.
Front bearings on your car are hard to diagnose as they make noise but no freeplay normally.

Dear Jag Tech,

The noise is consistent; i.e., the pitch doesn't change with speed, only the audio level.

I'm going to do some experiments today to see if it's  drivetrain. Maybe it's wind noise around the sun roof seal or ??

Where are you located relinuca?

Really never had any problem with 04 sunroofs. I would run hand over the inner of the front tires and see if they feel choppy. Run your hand around the inner tread, back and forward. 10k is a long time for an alignment issue to show up. I know they are new tires, but that doesnt mean anything in the noise department.

I'm in Jacksonville, FL.

I have now closely checked around my sunroof, and everything looks good. I've always detected a very slight wind noise when the sunroof is closed, but closing the interior panel mutes it just fine.

I'll check those tires carefully today.

Thanks,

relinuca

Dear Jag Tech,

A lot seems to be happening all at once with our faithful Jag. A Check Engine light came on for a few days recently-will be taking it in to get error codes pulled on Wed. Yesterday, I loaded a new Nav DVD and discovered the A/C won't come on!

I assume the NAV DVD only contains maps, listings, etc., and doesn't relate whatsoever to the HVAC system. Very weird, though.

Murphy's Law...my extended warranty just expired recently, too. Bummer.

I jacked up the front wheels and checked for play...everything seems fine. I also checked all four tires as you suggested for cupping, etc. And they seem fine, too.

Maybe something will come up when I take it in to the local dealer on Wed.

Let us know.
When you say the a/c doesnt work.....can you explain a little more. The blower doesnt work? The a/c controls do not work on touchscreen or hard keys?
A/c and Nav are tied in a bit. Share the same control panel remember.

Dear Jag Tech,

Neither the touch screen nor the buttons will activate the A/C. When I touch the A/C position on the screen, it "halo's" fine, but the A/C does not come on. Likewise, when I push the Auto button for A/C, the button light comes on but no A/C. Plus the fan does will not operate, regardless of what I do.
