Hey there - I'm new to this forum because I'm thinking about picking up a mid 1980s XJS coupe.

My brother and I are semi-hacks when it comes to wrenching cars, but we can handle certain kinds of stuff and we have enough money and time to deal with reasonable problems.  We're pretty experienced with Volvos but want something that has a bit more juice and prestige.

We're thinking about the XJS I mentioned above and could use some war stories from those have already tread this path.  What I've seen with respect to the mid 80s XJS is that they're well maintained - inside and out.  (plus we live in So Cal USA so there's no rust and other wear and tear is relatively minimal).

Our basic questions ....

How hard are these cars to work on in general?
I looked online and see pretty reasonable parts (availability and pricing) - is that everyone's experience.
What kinds of things are better to have done at the shop?
What's the HP of the V12 - I haven't found that yet.
What kind of aftermarket customization stuff can I buy for the car - or is that not something that exists for this car?

Mid, 80's the later the better. Prices are so cheap on these cars, you might just look at, at least an 89 1/2 and up.
If you do not mind getting your hands dirty, there is not much you cannot do yourself.
If you wish to see what a V12 can do, Google my name:Chadbourn Bolles, when you get there
click on the run at Maxton, NC. Do this only if you have a hi speed internet connection, as it is 11 min long.
I deal in XJ-S parts and can most likely answer just about any question you might have.
Custom stuff for the XJ-S, not much of that around.

Thank's Chadbourn - exactly what we needed to hear.  I'll keep your info and let you know if we pick up one of these jewels.

Just watched your vids - very enjoyable (and informative).  We're complete hacks compared to you and your team but thanks for responding and your info.  As I said before .. I need to grab one of these jewels and then we can talk.
