and you could be right, i.e., something could be turning it off, like the Ignition Switch itself. I would start there, at the Ignition Switch itself. It is a know problem that these switches get old and worn, and they jump to off by themselves. Although I am not saying that IS the problem with your car, it's the place to start troubleshooting. The following link is for a Series III XJ-6 ignition switch cleaning, (1980-1987), but essentially they are the same.
