All tires are new, balanced correct, Front end right, had this before all tires were done. Its a back and forth movement in the steering wheel, about one inch each way. Other then that the car rides straight with no movement at all. I can let go of the wheel car go straight ,but the wheel moves like I said back and forth not all the time. Lower strut bushing have some play in them, could that be it and if so can the lower stut bushing be had without buying the hole strut Can I get poly bushing?
Regards

Did you ever figure it out. My 2000 with 145,000 miles is starting to wander at speed.

Did you hit any potholes that could have bent something slightly?
The symptom that you discribed happened to me on my Benz and it was a control arm that needed replacing

I''ve now been told ( by a Merecedes mechanic) that I need a new steering rack ($2600). Anyone had this issue?

I would have an issue with a $2600 steering rack!!  I have rebuilts for $475 plus a $300 core charge.  Send you old, rebuildable rack back to us, and we credit back the $300.

I have just had this happen- car felt like a ship in a storm- wandering all over the road. my mechanic and two others thought it was the steering rack but it turned out to be a ball joint and wishbone that need replacing- $1000 -ouch (thank god for warranties) !

Cheers,

Francesca
