My 2002 x-type has 103k miles.  Last mon. the transmission started to "break-away" when shifting into passing gear @ 50+mph. The rear sensor sounds for 30sec. when shifting from Park to Reverse.  Tranny mechanic I trust, can't diagnose, doesn't have software, but thinks it's mechanical and may need a complete rebuild ($4-5k). Local dealer is very $$.   Condition is getting worse, breaks-away at lower speeds but can be driven.  I've had this car since new and really enjoy it. Does anyone know whether this is a simple repair and affordable or should I move to trade?  Thanks.

trusted tranny tech is not who i"d be going to for diag
get codes read from someone who knows what they are doing
preferebly jag tech
with that kind of mileage and your description of fault it sounds like it could be a mechanical failure ;-(
incorrect gear ratio faults im guessing
as to the back up sensors, a continuous sound when in reverse is telling you there is a fault with the system
possibly a rear bumper sensor fault or harness failure
hope this helps
