First time poster to this list.  Please be kind because I'm feeling really stupid.  Inherited a '86 XJ6 from my late father several years ago.  Been driving it about 2K/year.  A few weeks ago, Reverse went out. Per the Haynes manual, I attempted to adjust the rear brake band.  Snapped off the adjuster flush with the trans case.  I obtained a new adjuster piece with lock nut.  Assuming I can drill into the broken adjuster and get an "easy out" on it, can I remove the broken piece from the outside?  Then screw the new adjuster.  I.E., from the outside, in.  Or, must the adjuster piece be inserted from inside of the trans case?

Thanks in advance for advice from the list.

I'll have a look in a trans later, but I'm pretty sure you're toast. Do you know of a Dave Graul from Jenkintown, Pa?
