I do not have any problems yet, but this whole topic of tensioners keeps coming up and I have a 98 XJ8 that runs great.  However, what is a fair price to have this work done and is there anyone that can recommed a facility in the Tampa/Clearwater area if this were to be done as preventative service?

I am on the east coast of FL. It depends what you want done. I think we charge about 3k for upper and lower, parts and labour. Not positive though.

I had my XKR done for 1K by a private mechanic.  He has done over 50 tensioner replacements.

Hi Lew,
That price would be for secondaries only, and is reasonable. Are you back to typing with clean fingers?

I helped do upper/lower tensioner''s with my private mechanic so I could learn a bit. He charged $700 flat for the whole job, and it''s really not that hard, just time intensive at spots. Just follow the correct procedure. You just need the pricey tools! :)

too bad, you could have got off cheaper:

LABOR RATES:

$50.00 per hour
$60.00 per hour if you watch
$70.00 per hour if you help

hah niiice! Thank goodness I didn''t have to go to the dealership! They charge big bucks for that job. I will ask them tomorrow when I call for replacement (yet more plastic that cracks/flexes) valve cover. I''m going to estimate at least $3K for both primary/secondary replacement from Jaguar dealership. I didn''t need to get chains, so exclude that price. I''m just wanting about 60K miles out of this ride or until gas eats us all. At least it''s a tiny V8.

Nice learning about automechanics, if anyone ever needs some help with microsoft server 2k3/2k8 I''ve got your back!
