I have a 1993 XJ40 with a check engine light that comes on intermittently. I''ve been told this is likely caused by a bad O2 sensor of whcih there are four on the car. Apparently there is no way of knowing which one it is until it fails completely and the computer can hold the data for a scan I''m told. In checking with the Jaguar dealership locally I find these puppies are about $450.00 each plus labor, so changing them all out on a 93 $4000.00 cat is not an option. Does anyone know if these are specific to the year and type? Or would I be able to source a used unit and test it in each location. I''m told the front and back sensors are different, also that they are Jaguar specific and can not be obtained aftermarket. When the check engine light comes on the car runs ok, but almost stalls when pulling away from the lights as if fuel starved. If you shut of the negine and restart, the light is off and the car rns normally. After an indeterminate time which can be a few minutes or a few days, the light comes on and the problem returns. It seems to occur more often during highway driving conditions vs city slow driving, and for some reason less so when weather is cold and damp. Ideas? Solutions?

Got to thinking about it.  I''m pretty darn sure your car has only one.

I''m a little leary about putting more cash into the cat as it''s managed to swallow a lot of coin on repairs since I got it last year, so I''ll need to ensure it actually is the O2 Sensor acting up. Well over $200.00 so far with about six months of driving. Sigh the joy of Jaguar ownership/ Problem is it''s so friggin nice to drive when it''s happy.

I''m told that to get codes the light would need to remain on for the computer to hold the fault codes. I''m not sure if this is true or if it can be scanned and the intermitent fualt can be identified. If it can, I''d book my car in for service at my Jaguar dealer and find out what''s up. I can''t indentify and particular event that will cause the fault as it occurs on a totally random basis... and it always clears and resets if I restrat the car.
