2001 XK8 inside rear view mirror shakes to point of total nonfunction. Plastic looking thingy at mirror base stops the fibration if pushed up every 15 seconds but fails to hold mirror in a firm position. Any fix it advice on this would be appreciated. Internet search fails to show similar problems. One dealer told me he "didn''t like to fix rear view mirrors as such effort puts the expensive windshield in jeopardy". It is out of warranty.

My ''01 XKR is doing the same thing. Local dealer estimated $1k to replace entire system as there are no adjustments on it. I have temporarily resolved the issue by cutting a piece of sponge and sticking it between the windshield & the bottom plastic cover. It took a couple of attempts at getting the right sponge compression/shape figured out but now it can be driven without the horrendous rattling in your face! Its a cheap fix if you get it right...
