Can ''04 rear rotors be turned?

My wife just brought her ''04 in for the 40K service. I complained of a harmonic noise which they claimed was because the rear caliper wasn''t releasing and causing the pads to rub on the rotor. They said they had to replace the rotor and rear pads at a cost of $500. I told him I wanted the parts back that they replaced and he said ok. They said by sanding an lubing the slides, the would be cured. Well, my wife picked up the car and they had already thrown the parts away so she couldn''t bring them back for me to look at. To top it off, the vibration is still there. My question is, can the rotors thick enough to be turned or do they need to be replaced? I don''t mind replacing pads but if the rotor wasn''t bad (no pulsations in the brake pedal when applied) and they replaced it just for profit then it will make me even madder. I was told there was still 30% of life left on the pads that they replaced so it wasn''t like it was metal on metal to ruin the rotor.

Tough to say if the rotors needed turned w/o getting a thickness tested on them. Sure they can (I think someone around here said the S-type Rs are not recommended to be turned, only replaced) and only 40k miles, I think if slightly warped, a good turning would have cured your vibration in the brake pedal. Rears just don''t get the wear that the front does. Also, if the rear caliper wasn''t releasing, simply putting new rotors and pads wont fix that issue, could need a new caliper kit, or perhaps just lubricated in all the right places. I would be mad that you asked for the old parts and they could not show them to you. I''m sure that''s not the first time they''ve been asked that.

Did they do both front and rear, or just make rear repairs?  If only the rears, I would suggest getting the fronts turned (like an NTB or something) and see if that fixes your uneasy vibration.

Thanks for the reply H2Oboy. There was no pulsation in the brake pedal before so I don''t think any of the rotors were warped. The service advisor told me they always replace the rotors in pairs and never turn them. Since I was charged $110 for the "KIT-BRAKE DISK", I''m wondering if they did replace them both or only one. I''m not very impressed with the service dept at this point.
As it turns out, the car still has several different vibrations! One, I believe, is from the tires but the one I was complaining about is still there. It''s a low frequency pulsating noise that starts around 40 mph and I still hear it at 75 mph. Another is a higher pitched noise that is quite loud when my wife pulls into the driveway. The car is back in the shop (warranty runs out Tuesday!) to fix these problems. They just called and said the high pitched sound is due to a defective flexplate and they won''t have the new one until Tuesday. Jaguar only pays for four days rental of a loaner car so I will end up having to pay for that.

At the dealer, they only come as a set, so you got both replaced.

Jaguar does not turn rotors. Jaguar always wants new rotor and pads installed. Jaguar rotors are a soft metal. Thats why when its time for brake, the rotors have a very nice traper edge.   The problem on 02-04 there wasn''t silders. The brake just seat on the caliper mount so after time from brake dust, salt, and sand the brake pads will stop moving, which will cause the caliper to not return.  For 5 years i never had to replace rear cailpers on a x-tpe

Good advise there guys[:)]..I changed my Rotors when I did my Pads..EBC sport rotors are way better than OE Rotors...

Thanks for all of the replies. I haven''t heard back from the dealer so I guess Jag will pay for the flex plate repair. I just hope they find the reason for the other noise as well.
