Hi guys. How far away should our keys for our cars lock and unlock our doors. Mine i have to be within about 150 ft. before it does anything. I have replaced the battery and it doesn''t seem to do much. Most cars i have used the remote from 1000 ft. away. So i was just wondering is the signal that weak in our remotes? or is it just my particular set of keys?

mine seems to "unlock" in the 150ft range and lock in about the 500 ft range.

Hmm i haven''t tried locking the car from much further than 20 ft. I mean i guess 150 ft. away isn''t bad to unlock the car. It is just weird cause most cars that have had the remotes that i have used seem to have a further range to them.

I heard if you hold it ontop of your nose...range increases.  If you''ve metal plates in your head, range goes up even farther.  I tried mine with braces on (when I was 27) without any noticable increase.  Disappointed I was.

Hmmm........I can''t really imagine why you''d want to lock / unlock your car from 1000 feet
but......
On an episode of Top Gear some time ago JC tried this
tried locking / unlocking the car until its farthest range and wouldn''t work anymore.......then.....held the fob up to his head and pointed to the vehicle thru his head and it was good for another 20 feet or so.....lol
One of those stranger than fiction things, but true....

Jim

i know it sounds strange about why i would want to unlock my car from further but there are times i have to carry stuff from a store or such and my hands are full but if i could unlock the car and open the trunk from the front of the store that would be nice. I know it isn''t a huge deal in most cases but i just don''t understand why the range is what it is, when most cars have a further range.

I think that different countries have different regulation on how powerful a radio transmitter that you can operate without a licence.

My Canadian car has only a 10-20m range even with new batteries. I am sure it is FCC regulated.

Strange but true - your fob will work from the other side of the world - by mobile phone. Ideal for when you lock yourself out! Lock your car - with your key in your pocket of course - ring home and get someone to press unlock near to the phone whilst you are stood next to your car - doors open. I have seen it work!
