Brake buster -> RE: Turn key and starter doesn''''''''''''''''t crank? (6/24/2008 9:33:31 AM)

there is another possible cause, and from your description it sounds the more likely culprit there is a transponder chip in your ignition key, this chip is read by an antenna that is located in the steering column , this antenna can touch the moving parts and get damaged or even broken off , this has the effect of shortening the range of any signals that need to be read and it starts causing trouble when starting the car, exactly as you describe , it happens to my car now and again, and as you say, you have to keep trying, from what i have read, the replacement part is about £20 UK , and isnt that hard to fit, but i dont know any part numbers, you could try repairing it, as it only a simple cable ? a permanent fix ( but not recommended ) is to tape the transponder chip directly to the antenna , so it always reads, but this effectively by-passes the anti-theft system...... hope this helps BB btw, if you look at any of your keys you will see a small moulded round section, about the size of a match head, the chip is in a hole that is blanked off by this round section, the chip is about the size of a grain of rice ( maybe a little bigger ? ) , that why they need programing to you car if you get replacements etc
