Well, right off the bat, that ticking you think is hydraulic lifters are actuall the secondary tensioners that are partially plastic. If you do a search on this forum for that word or two, you''ll find a ton of threads on it. Failed tensioners can cost you more than a few hundred dollars. Sorry, but if you buy that car, you''re looking at a tensioner job right of the bat (before she goes). Others will chime in on some other issues you need to be aware of. I would also suggesting, since a majority of the threads in this forum are asking for help troubleshooting or repairing their cars, you may find just by browsing the XJ forums, you''ll come up with hot topics so you can be thoroughly educated on the type of jag you are looking at. But typically, XKs and the XJs share similar brake systems, transmissions and engines, so looking around there to will give you even more information to soak up. wish you luck!
