hi guys i''m new to the forum and jags in general but i was trying to get some info on the xj8''s b4 i bought one. i found a 98 xj8 with 100,932 miles on it. asking price $6995. now i need to know what kind of problems i may have with the car in the future. as of now the car seems to run great except on cold starts i noticed a slight ticking noise which goes away when revving the engine. leads me to believe hydraulic lifters or something. basically am i gonna spend an arm and a leg maintaining this car and if not what should i be on the lookout for... appreciate any input cuz i REALLY want to get the car but i don''t want to go broke trying to fix it lol. thanks guys

Well, right off the bat, that ticking you think is hydraulic lifters are actuall the secondary tensioners that are partially plastic. If you do a search on this forum for that word or two, you''ll find a ton of threads on it.  Failed tensioners can cost you more than a few hundred dollars.  Sorry, but if you buy that car, you''re looking at a tensioner job right of the bat (before she goes). Others will chime in on some other issues you need to be aware of.

I would also suggesting, since a majority of the threads in this forum are asking for help troubleshooting or repairing their cars, you may find just by browsing the XJ forums, you''ll come up with hot topics so you can be thoroughly educated on the type of jag you are looking at.   But typically, XKs and the XJs share similar brake systems, transmissions and engines, so looking around there to will give you even more information to soak up.

wish you luck!

thanks alot h20 i''ve been on here for a couple hours and got alot more info. what i was planning on doing is getting a price on how much fixing that will cost and taking it to the dealer and see what he''ll knock off since it looks like i have no choice but to have that fixed asap. i''ll keep reading but any info on stuff too look for would be fantastic.

If it is any help to you :  I just got a quote to replace primary and secondary tensioners and chains on my ''99 XJR (should be the same for you I would think).  Came in $2400.  Reading through the various threads there are "kits" you can get to do it yourself, or to put in the hands of a trusted mechanic.  Personally Im saving up for the dealer to do it.

Good luck

thanks a bunch that gives me a litlle idea. seems like the kit is gonna run me about 750 then the labor for install. no jag dealer within 50 miles of where i live so i''m gonna have to go with a shop that i can trust. it''s kinda seeming like if i replace the tensioners i''m in the clear with LARGE mechanical problems.
