Ok guys; I got a hell of a deal (so I thought) on a ''99 XJR, immaculate, 90k. It burns oil on startup, misfires according to the OBD (intermittently), and has a positive VIN match for the "Nikasil Years." I got such a hell of a good deal on the car ($5,800) that I hate to just part it out or flip it. So my question is what are my options? I''ve read a lot in the forum about this issue, but didn''t see much in the way of resolution. Rebuild or Replace, Repair or Part-Out, any advice is welcome! What are the costs involved? What are peoples outcomes? Brett

I would not worry too much about the Nikasil problem. I would worry more about the timing chain tensioners. We''ve only seen one engine condemned due to Nikasil failure. Now tensioners, that''s another story.

^that, what ken was talking about, and the burning oil and misfire I would take to any jag-experience mechanic. See if you can get a diagnosis from an independent shop before going to the dealer.

Yea, I''ve got a trusted mechanic taking a peak at it tomorrow. I''ve got the "rattle" at cold startup, so I''m sure that''s going to be on the list. What do I do to avoid the embarassment of the clouds of blue smoke on cold/luke warm startup?

Do you have any engine codes? Maybe you can solve that with ignition coils... Just thinking by keyboard.

Sorry to say, but that''s not much of a deal anymore, these cars have dropped in price like hotcakes. All cars are dropping, but I bought my car in Feburary only for it to drop more than $2k in 4 months. My car is a 98 just hitting 80K miles. It is in pretty good shape all around, but I see these now (98-00 usually) for around $5500-$6000 with less miles than that, even around the midwest. You won''t really find a 98-99 that doesn''t need tensioner''s now. So add on another $1k at least, that''ll bring you to at least $6,800. If I were to do it again i''d go for an 04+, i''ve been driving an 04 xj8 for almost 2 weeks now. in my opinion they seem to be a made better all around from a smoother ride to just a better feel in general. What a jump from the x308 that''s for sure. I''ve seen lots for less than $14k with full warranties (about to expire i''m sure) Do yourself a favor and like kenny there says, do the whole tensioner job. I''d check the $25 thermostat and get a metal water pump for $90, as those are bound to go out if they haven''t already. Don''t use cheap gas, and don''t live in the south hah, and you probably won''t have to wory about the euro nikasil mistake unless it''s already toast. goodluck dude, hope this helps you out.

My XJRs been at the mechanic for a week now. I''m not sure if he''s still diagnosing it, or using it for fun. The word now is that there''s oil in the air box, and that the spark plugs in Bank B(if I''m correct, the bank directly in front of the drivers seat [USA spec]) are saturated with oil. If this were a Nikasil issue, I would reason that both Banks A & B would be affected: evenly. It''s worth noting that the previous owner replaced Bank A''s coil packs. Atom, I think you may have hit the nail on the head. My ''diamond in the rough'' is but mere fools gold. However, there''s just something about the damn thing I like. Any advice is always welcome.
