Hmm let''s see the rest of our fleet...

1989 Buick daily driver summer and winter with 200,000 miles on the clock, total maintenence expenses last year on this 20 year old car... $200.00 Oil changes, a/c recharge

1991 Jeep Cherokee dailly driver 417000 kms oil changes 4X4 actuator solonoid, $400.00

1993 Jaguar driven total of three months summer only, quickly surpassing $3000.00

Math was never my strong point.... But I don''t need to work for NASA to see that if I factor in the purchase price and repairs to date, Jaguar''s costing about $3000.00 a month to drive thus far, and supposedly mines a good one..  I''m thinking set the Jag on fire, take the $1500.00 or so the insurance company will give me for it, and I''ll be making $3000.00 a month which will alow me to buy a McLaren or Aston martin with some change left over.

Xj40, this is a bad sign of things to come, as I am a fellow 93 jag owner.  I have tried to drive it as little as possible this summer, as everytime I do drive it, it gets worse and worse it feels.  My steering wheel is no longer centered, my car makes loud low pitch noises if I turn at a speed that isn''t blazingly slow, my air conditioner no longer functions (although that is expected), and my radio often shuts off.  non of these are problems for me, as I hardly care anymore about minor luxuries in life.  But I can only fear things to come, as my car is barely oevr 80,000 miles.

I hear you. I keep hoping my 93 will be ok each time I put a another huge dollop of cash into it''s upkeep. Then again the car is fair to good at best with weird splotches on the paint where the clear coat has failed, and interior typical of these cars. As I write this it is still at the Dealer and dread the call telling me the grand I just agreed to doesn''t fit the problem. The problem is despite all of this when the car''s running good and I drive it I still love it... But... The moment I relax and start to enjoy it though it once again fails. After the latest repairs, the A/C needs servicing, the blower motor needs top be overhauled as it only blows an anemic little puff of air, and so on. Otherwise mecanicaly, my cat is pretty good. I just worry about putting too much into it and never getting even close to what I put into it if I can manage to get someone to buy it. The real test of the true value of these cars is to offer one for sale. Suddenly no one seems interested in buying it. As for going to a dealership and trying to trade it in it''s like you''re a leper... They don''t even want to low ball you with an offer, even the scuzziest dealership doesn''t want to see a Jag on their lot. Overall I regret ever buying a Jag, and will never do so again. Now if I can ever get rid of this piece O, I''ll buy another relaible car like our, Buick, Jeep, Mustang whatever. As for my past love of Jags and a desire to get a nice XK8 coupe, I''ll pass.

BTW 93, I''d get your front wheel braing looked at. It sounds like the same problem I had with mine recently. In some ways these cars use a lot of old tech and the wheel bearings are always failing.

At $3,000/month (which beats that Saab I had), you could buy a nice X300 for two months of XJ40 service.

That said, I would consider an XJ40 for a track car. I have asked the JEC racers in Enlgand for advice on picking and building a Jaguar for track duty. My Miata is fun, but it cannot keep up with the other cars in my run group.

Hmm, By Track Car are you refering to a Pace Car? Or a pure race car? Either way I''d agree the XJ40''s have potential... as with everything about these cars (very low key and understated), these little buggers go like crazy when power is applied. I don''t think any car would find them easy to out pace. Not to mention they''re kinda cool looking and as we all know they are smooooooth.

Yes, a race car. The other guys in my run group (competition/instructors) have Porsches, Corvettes, NASCAR trucks, etc. The little Miata sticks with everything but the Porsches on any curved piece of track, but I get left behind on every straight. And the thought seeing how an AJ6/AJ16-powered Jaguar will run with as much as 550 pounds of ''luxury weight'' removed is so tempting.

I''d think a stripped down Jag would do quite well considering their heritage. Interesting to see what performance parts are out there. I seem to recall they did race XJ6''s back in the day. Would make an interesting project, But for me I''ll stick to our 2006 Mustang.

My car jsut returned from the dealer, they looked at it and said to wait until the problem gets worse before they do anything.  I don''t know how that is supposed to make me feel.  Firestone told me to fix the bearings and the rack and pinion needed to be tightened, but I guess I will listen to the dealer.
