I want more power, and I have a few ideas.  Not sure if this has been brought up here in detail, but...

1.  Is a small turbo impossible for the X-Type?  I''''m talking <=260 HP.
2.  Would it be cheaper to buy the more powerful 3.0L from the S-Type (if possible).

Have at it guys.  Waiting on input.

I think that quite a few people have kicked this idea around before and it always gets back to a weak, fragile drive train, not so beefy transfer case, and the fact that its 40/60 for power front to rear. anyone else can chime in, but I think that was the answer some of the smarter members came up with. think you should just get the s-type-R. Throw in a K&N filter, use synthetic oil and get a cat back exhaust system...You be money ahead and it will sound cool too.

I know there was a guy here that seriously looked into getting power out of his X, which was Racer.  However, when I arrived, he left shortly thereafter, so back to the drawing board for info.

The 2.5L V6 in the Jaguar is very similar to the Duratec 2.5L V6, correct?  The Duratec V6 can be turbo''d, so can one assume that the X can get the same treatment?

Again, I''m not talking about doing anything extreme.  <= 260HP.  I''m not engineer, but if the X can handle 240HP from the 3.0L, 20 more HP shouldn''t hurt

I''m seriously taking this into consideration.  If it can be done for 3500 or less, I''m up for the challenge.

Spartan, you can get an extra say 20 hp out of the motor easily for under $3500.  The issue that you are going to have is that the transfer case is going to give up the ghost a lot sooner unless work is done to it too.  Are we talking about it failing in 1,000 miles in stock condition?  Probably not.  Within 20K miles?  Odds are significantly higher.  So, you have to ask yourself, money now, money later?  The motor will handle the additional power easily.  Getting the power is fairly easy to obtain too.  But, look at the weak link, the transfer case.  You want reliability, that is where your focus should be.

^ I see your point.  However, the transfer case can handle 231HP.  Will a 12% increase from 231HP kill the transfer case?  I''m not sure, but I doubt it.

I use that number because the 3L is rated at 231 HP and the current transfer case handles that just fine.  I have the 2.5L, and a bump up to 260 HP would be a 34% increase for my car, which is significant.  I''d pay good money for that because I think it''d be worth it, considering that I plan on keeping the car for a while since it''s nearly paid for.

It all depends on how you drive your car. If you like to launch with the AWD, and increased horsepower the wear and tear on your powertrain will be significant. If you want a good ammount of HP increase I would keep the power to the highway to increase reliability. Id bet a transfer case could handle a 12% HP increase as long as you dont floor it at every green light.

Spartan, all that you can do is try it and see what happens.  I have done a lot to my truck that most people thought would drop it to its knees.  But, I accept the fact that things are going to wear a bit faster.  But, I am getting the look/function that I want out of the truck.  But, I figure if you can get a better set of gears in the transfer case, then that would allow you to get more power from the car reliably.  The big trick is finding an upgraded set of gears.  Granted, part of it might just involve getting a second transfer case and giving it to a metalurgical shop and let them heat treat the gears to improve their strength.

The options are only limited by what you can afford and what you are willing to do.  Getting the gears heat treated should be fairly cheap.  But, most of the cost will be in pulling apart the transfer case and getting it in/out of the car.  Granted, you can probably also talk with a machine shop and if you give them the gears from out of the stock transfer case, they can machine up some new gears for you out of much stronger material.  Then you are golden.  But, this is one of the more expensive routes (about $500 for the gears more than likely, then add in disassembly/assembly).
