I was planning to change th ebrake fluid. Can a pressure bleeder be used safely on the 2004 XJ8?

I used the power bleeder to change the brake fluid, it worked fine. It works fine at 15 psi.

Do you have to do anything special to flush the ABS module?

I did nothing special, the fluid goes through the ABS on the way to the wheels, so part of it gets changed in the process. I don''t know how much of the ABS unit gets flushed though, since not all the internal valves are open, the fluid is blocked in the closed areas. I think when changing fluid, the fluid can get from the master cylinder through the pressure holding valves (four of them) but cannot get through the pump check valve or the pressure reduction valves (four of them), all of which are closed at this time. These  open with ABS pressure reduction. This assumes that the ABS uses two-position solenoids and not three-position ones. I know of no way to access which type of solenoid valves the car uses. Suffice it to say that in changing fluid, the ABS is okay but not fully flushed, this is the reason they all say not to let dirty fluid backflush into the ABS, it is  hard to get the dirt out if it. There is a piece of equipment that can be connected to the ABS to cycle the valves to get air out, but this is not a common shade tree unit. If you mess up and get air in the ABS, you are possibly in for a trip to the dealer and maybe with no brakes.
