I turn the key and hear nothing but a very quiet click. Nothing else. All lights come on but that''s it.

On a number of ocassions I have let it sit in the driveway and it will fire up just like there''s nothing wrong four or even five days later. If it does not start the first time the normal scenario is that it won''t start even if I try up to six or seven times. On a couple of ocassions however it has started on the second attempt after failing the first time, but that''s definately not the norm.

Luckily so far I have never been left stranded and it always happens either at home or at a friends.

I did replace the battery, even though it didn''t really appear to be the culprit. It''s been happenning for about six weeks.

Before I replaced the battery it did start up after a charger had been connected over night.........and with the charger still connected......this may have been a coincidence though.

Any ideas?

check the power studs.. to the left of the battery.. they come loose.. and melt and give the same problems as you speak of.. also there is one under the hood.. right side under the cover.. they melt as well. they give intermittent no starts..

Totally appreciate your suggestions.........on a side note I bought the car in San Diego and drove it to Seattle and before leaving SD I found a great mechanic (English with decades of Jag experience) who did the Timing Chain Tensioners and a bunch of other stuff.

Anyway he has basically been giving me same advise as you................it just seems a little tough to diagnose.

its the transponder/immobilizer thats at fault

the aerial in the steering column cowl gets damaged, this restricts the strength and range of the signal to pick up the chip in your key

your symptoms are typical of this problem

new imobilizer antenna required

Thanks BB. alckc, I sent my San Diego mechanic''s name and number to your email. He is a great guy. If you don''t get it, post again. Too bad I am in Seattle.

And BB, I owe you an apology of sorts. I saw a post you placed to a simillar sounding problem to mine and I am embarassed to say that I totally discounted your advise in that previous post as it sounded so crazy..................this time I will follow up on it. (Little did I know) Thanks again.....Gary
