This is a follow up to a previous post of mine. After 10 minutes of driving my 97'' XK8 the temperature shoots up to red and I believe the transmission goes into "limp" mode as it no longer wants to shift into higher gears. There is no water leaking from the engine so how can I ascertain that it is in fact the Thermostat that is the problem? If I bring it to an auto parts store and they hood it up to the diagnotic macjne will that diagnose it? Ken/ Atlanta

You can remove the thermostat and put it in boiling water to see if it opens fully. For the price of a thermostat, you may just want to put one in there. 4.0 thermostats are junk.

I have a 97 XK8 as well and had the EXACT same problem - after a few weeks I found that I needed a new water pump and thermostat - nothing leaked and there was no indication of the issue other than after it warmed up the car over heated FAST. The water pumps in the XK8 are poor plastic so replace with an upgraded water pump and thermostat and it will fix your problem. Thermostat is easy to replace yourself, I did it at my office in 10 minutes but the water pump I had a shop take care.
