What is the desirable voltage of a battery, as installed in an S-Type?  I have 12.44v; thinking I should have closer to 13, and it''s 5 years old.

If you still have 12.44 after 5 years, you are doing well.
Remember it is a 12v battery. Engine off 12v or over is good. Running you should see 13.5 or higher.

conipc, a new battery will have a voltage of 12.6 VDC with the engine off.  With the engine running, you should be up at 13.7 or 14.4 VDC (depends on the style of multimeter you have).  Being at 12.44 with the engine off and all loads de-energized, that is a little on the low side, but not horrible.  That is just saying that your battery is getting weak.  You can do a load test in your driveway by simply connecting the multimeter across the battery and then attempting to start the car.  The battery voltage should remain above 11.0 VDC.  If it is dropping below 11.0 VDC, then the battery is starting to go and should be replaced.

If you need more help, just hollar.

Dennis, you have the left handed version of a multimeter and since you are right handed, that is why things are backwards for you.  Get yourself a right handed multimeter and all should be good.

LMAO.
