I am considering purchasing a pre owned 1999 XJ8 with 46,000 original miles. Car fax report is clean of accidents. I am just unfamiliar with this year of the car. Can someone share with me key things to examine and/or look out for? I am taking it to a Jaguar Dealership on Monday...but I want the mechanic to tell me some specific things...based upon what I can learn from here. Help me...PLEASE!!!!

Water pump failure was common with the original design - should have been replaced by now; secondary timing chain tensioners have been redesigned also (twice), and could lead to catastrophic expense if not updated. Nikasil-lined cylinder bores may also be suspect - have the dealer do a "blow-by test." Have them check the suspension bushings. There was a recall on the throttle body; the dealer should confirm that all relevant recalls have been done.
Get the service records if at all possible.

Thanks so much! If you hadn''t responded, I would not have a clue about some of these parts to look out for. I will keep you posted once I return from the dealership on Monday of the outcome.

being a ''99 car, it will have the AJ27 engine over the first V8 for this range which was the AJ26, being an AJ27 means that it has the revised throttle body , and will not require the recall work...also , it will also have second generation tensioners fitted from new, but these also fail,

we are actually on revision 5 now for the tensioners, revision 4 being the metal bodied version
i know this because when i bought my own replacements directly from Jaguar, all the old revisions came up on the screen with the newer ones superseding all the ones before

Thanks so much for the advice. I am definitely taking notes and have written down all of the concerns to walk in the dealership with. I will let you know the outcome on Monday once I return from the dealership.

Everyone,
Let me first say thanks to all again for responding. This site has been a tremendous help fo rme.

Here is the report from the inspection. I took the car and in and they were extremely helpful. I asked them to perform the normal inspection on top of what was suggested from you guys.

The water pump is good.

The Secondary Timing Chain Tensioners are still on the car and has not been updated to a newer version. However, they assured me that they have only seen this model in for updating was at least 60k to 70k miles and to have them updated now could be a nice 2-3k.

They couldn''t do a "blow by test" because it would take more time to complete but from what they could tell, the engine is in very good condition.

The Bushings do need to be replaced, but the cost for that was not that expensive...it was labor that was hurting the pocket.

The front brake ducts needs to be replaced, again the cost for this is not that expensive...it is the labor.

Last but not least, the car needs a wheel alignment.

Given that, the total cost for the bushings and brake ducts to be repaired at the dealer cost about $900.00. I can do the wheel alignment elsewhere...right?

With all of that being said...if you were in my shoes, what would you do?

One more thing to look for are missing VIN labels. There should be one on each body panel as well as each door. If one is missing, then chances are that panel had to be repainted for one reason or another.

Did you test drive it in the rain at night? best time to test drive because you need to turn everything on. Lights, defogger, wipers etc. and you will see if any leaks.
