(This message board is screwy and will not let me post more than a certain amount of text at one time...) I was struck in the rear... The rear bumper is toast, the backup sensors on the passenger side don''''t work. I was hit off center toward the passenger side. The "robotic" panel between the quarter panels was bent in, and the trunk space was pushed in near the top. My exhaust on the passenger side was pushed toward the front - meaning it was bent. I wasn''''t able to pull it back and put it back in the pipe hanger so I know it''''s bent. That''''s the obvious damage. I am taking it tomorrow to a repair shop. If there is anything else they''''ll have to tell me.

The shop I am taking it to is a Jag certified body shop. The guy I talked to said that if they have to replace the "rear subframe floor" (the trunk space) that the repairs will be between $10K and $17K. If the rear subframe floor is ok and just the robotic panel is replaced, repairs will be between $6K and $10K. The way it was explained to me, these XK''s do not have major frames, they have sub frames, of which some of the body panels are an integral part. Also, XK''s prior to model year 05 have steel subframes, and model year 05 and later have aluminum subframes - which are supposedly 48% stronger than the steel subframes. Now the steel subframes are very stout, so they aluminum ones must be very strong!

The other cars front end (an older Chrysler 300M) was smashed with the hood bent into a V, and the engine bent down. The cop that wrote the accident up said he had to be doing at least 20MPH when he hit me. He was amazed that my Jag did not have more damage. This all made sense once the guy at the body shop explained (to me) the structure and strength of the rear subframe on these cars. However, most people feel that a car is not worth as much after it has been in an accident, no matter how good the repairs are.
