I have a 1988 xj6 that was running fine until recently. The car would turn over, but would not start, Then I changed the fuel filter and it will now run, but after driving for a few minutes and especially when I stop at a sign or light, it takes off very slow and stays at about 20 -25 miles per hour until I drive for awhile, and then it seems to pick up some speed, but still isen''t all that. Any comments on this would be much appreciated.

You might want to check the fuel filters in the tanks, may need cleaning as well.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware that this car had a filter in the tank, but I will check it out. I have noticed that the smell of fuel has been very strong when I open the trunk of the car. Also I noticed that the T- shaped hose from the oil filler neck, that goes into the tube of the air flow meter has some cracks in it, so I am going to replace that as soon as I can get to the Jag Dealer. If anyone has more comments on this please let me know.

They''ll be a filter in each tank. Drain the tanks, then, there are two drain plugs, one inside the other. The smaller is for draining. The larger, basically a large nut, is for accessing the filter. You''ll see the filter, and just pull it out. These tanks are nortorious for collecting water, as well as all kinds of crud. Draining a little off should be a regular ritual, maybe every 6 months or so. I''d have a new rubber gasket for the drain plug. Cheap, and available at any Jaguar parts house, or dealer.

Thank''s Keith. As soon as I run some of the gas out, I will drain the tank. However, I dont believe that this Jag has two tanks, because there is only one gas filler neck and I only see one gas tank located in the trunk. Does this sound right to you? If this 1988 xj6 3.6 does only have the one tank, should I follow your directions, but on just the one tank? A jag parts man, told me that there were some differences in parts ,etc between 2 similar 1988 jag xj6 cars. So im just trying to make sure that I am giving you the correct information about the car, because I have very little knoledge about jags myself. However, im trying to change that.

OK, yours may be different, just find the drain on the tank, and I''d bet theres a filter just inside the drain plug. Gotta love these cars, not all the same. Some of the differences come from running out of parts in mid year, and the factory using whatever was available.

My apolizies, I could have sworn I read you had a 87, instead of an 88. Of course there is a difference. My imput would have been OK with the series III, but may not be with your 88. I guess age is taking its toll on my eyesite. Couldn''t hurt though, to make sure theres no crud gathering in the tank, blocking the intake lines.

Keith,

I just got around to working on the Jag. I thought that before draining the tank I would buy some air-flow meter spray and applied it to the sensor within the A.F.M.. The car seems to be running alot better so far; atleast it will drive at a normal speed now, but I am still going to drain the tank, both because you recommended it, and because there was some black nasty stuff that came out of the hose and filter when I changed the fuel filter. Your help is very much appreciated. You are the only one that I could get to respond on this site.
