I''m seriously considering buying a 96 XJS.

Specs call for premium gas.  However, I''ve read that regular (87 octane) is OK IF the vehicle is equipped with knock sensing in the engine controls.

Articles say you suffer a performance decrease but if that is something you want to regain just begin using premium again.

I assume the 96 6 cylinder engine would have this feature.

Is this correct regarding controls??

Thanks,

Dan W.

Dan, knock sensor can only adjust so far.  Don''t run regular gas.  Most likely result in engine damage over the long term.

Plus the miles per gallon loss you get with lower octane isn''t worth it. Your only looking at about a 6.00 per tank full difference!
