Right now i cant answer for the MPG''''s because my gas gauge isnt responding correctly. Couple that with the fact i primarly drive it to and from the office and a few errands in between which would total about 15 miles round trip. On a full tank that may have lasted a week & half, giver or take. I figured if im not going to be driving it hard, with the engine wide open all the time, i should be ok. The 84 is a heavier car and in my opinion rides smoother than that of the later models. Also too check the electrical system on the 84, there have been some known issues with that in the 80 model types. Other than that the car is fun to drive, with alot of room to stretch. If i find out anything else i will let you know.

I had 15 MPG highway. I remember replacing thermostat, it was open, but not sure if I checked MPG before or after replacement.

My 1988 XJ-SC 5.3L will get 17MPG on the hwy and around 13MPG in town if I keep my foot out of it. The hwy mileage is with the car running around 70-75. Cruising at 60-65 I''ve actually gotten 17.5. At 65MPH the engine is turning about 2400RPM as I recall. Even at 80MPH it gets 16MPG which isn''t too bad for a 4400lb car feeding a V12. The 5.3L V12 HE was introduced in the 1981 model year so the 1984 XJ-S would have the HE (high efficiency) engine.

My 90 XJS Sovereign (I6) has been getting fantastic mileage, relatively speaking...averaging about 27mpg running around the city and to the office, and just last weekend I took it on a short trip (150 miles each way) and was astounded to watch the VCM stay at 36mpg.

My 1988 XJS V12 gets 11 to 15 highway. Depends on how FAST you drive. at 80 MPH it is only 11 mpg. At 55 it is 15 mpg. That is NOT a computer estimate. That is tracking miles devided by gallons at pump.
