this XJ Production Chart does not include the 2-seater XJ-S, and it does not specify 12-cylinder car production, it includes All Sedan (Saloon) Production with both engines from 1968 through 2000.
Copyright of this chart belongs to Jaguar World Monthly, Kelsey Publishing, and its Editor, Paul Skilleter.

Is this total, or liek america or england.  I didn't realize these cars were so rare if it is total of both countries, because only 23,000 for my car seems really low

those figures are TOTAL Jaguar car production which includes Left Hand Drive AND Right Hand Drive Sedans AND 6 and 12 cylinder cars for all of Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Africa, for the years shown. Jaguar are like Ferrari and Maserati in terms of production numbers, very few are made. Jaguar is a very small company, they don't make millions of cars like Ford or GM.  They make 20 thousand cars a year on the average at best, sometimes less, and only 2 or 3 thousand are exported to the USA. That's why when I see one in a junkyard, it's a sad picture. Now you know too.

23,000 in sales for 1 year is pretty average.

This chart is cleary inaccurate!!

Showing the XJ40 starting as early as 1983!! Although 83 was the end of the British Leyland era, and the beginning of the Eagan cars, certianly no XJ40s were produced before 88.

Granted, some changes were made in the production runs of the cars, and sometimes it seems that Jaguar had a reputation for using up old parts that they had sitting around. But look at the differences between the 87 XJ6 and 88 XJ40.

Compare this chart to Thorley's book, or even Jaguar Heritage Trust's numbers.
You'll be surprised.

you would have to argue that point to the Editor of Jaguar World Monthly magazine, Mr. Paul Skilleter, who did the research from Jaguar Cars' factory records. It does seem odd to me too that 42 XJ-40 were made in 1983,  in the middle of the Series 3 XJ-6,  and five years before its debut in the USA. Perhaps they were experimental or sample cars, used to research the market or whatever.
