Rare Spares: The Jaguar XJ220 Owes A Favor To One Tire Company

By -

Regardless of what car you have, a tire is always a consumable. But what if they’re all gone?

High speeds require careful attention to detail, and nothing tops that list more than tires. Spinning with centrifugal force hundreds of times stronger than gravity, the right tire is critical for such a high speed car. Originally, the XJ220 was shod with tires from Bridgestone, but after the car’s production run, there was no longer a need to make the tire.

Fast forward a few years and Bridgestone has set out to completely redesign the special dimensions demanded by the speedy Jag. In one way, you could say the tire was re-designed from scratch, with information about the original tire quite scarce. In another way, you could say the band is back together. Development of the new tire included the original development team from Jaguar and Bridgestone, which set the XJ’s lofty high-speed records.

Such lengths were set to make the tire correct that chassis number #004, the original development chassis, was used. Rubber which fits this car, would be worthy of any XJ220 in the world.
