"Context Help" for Needles.ods

This help file is provided because there is a bug in the LibreOffice software
that does not allow all the carefully created help to be displayed correctly.

If you are using versions after v3.4.5, you may have noticed that some of the
help items are badly truncated.

See here:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92530

Fortunately, from Version 5.3 of LibreOffice, this has been resolved.

If you are using "older" versions of Windows, that is from "XP" up to Windows 7,
you are recommended to use version 3.4.5 of LibreOffice which can be found here:
LibO_3.4.5rc2_Win_x86_install_multi.exe

Users of Linux PC's or Macs will also be able to source this older version
of the software from the same website.

For the benefit of those previously "stuck" with the modern/broken software,
you are recommended to upgrade to v5.3 or higher as soon as possible.

In the meantime, some of the messages from the "Data" tabs are detailed below.
This information will disappear from the archive at some point in the future...

Cell A1
"Index"

These are the fixed measuring points
in 1/8" increments.

Index 1 is measured as close to the
thickest working part of the needle
as possible, ie just under the mounting
boss on most needle types.

Cell C1
"Test Needle"

Enter a bespoke needle profile here
and locate similar existing profiles
from the list.

You can name the needle in cell C1
and you can use this like any other
needle name on both the "Advanced"
and "Basic" tabs.

The name can have a maximum of
4 letters and MUST NOT be the same
name as any existing needle.

The needle needs to have a minimum
of 3 index points provided. These must
be for Index No 2, the "Priority Index"
and the "Working Range" Index.

To locate similar profiles from the
needle chart on the right, select or
type the test needle's name in cell "D1".

Cell F1
"Average Needle"

This is the average of all the
needles on this data sheet.

It is calculated by the spreadsheet
and does not actually exist.

Cell A22
"Needle Type/Tab Name"

This can be:
F90, S90, F100, S100, F125,F187,F250,
Z90, B90, Z100 or B100.

"F" for a "fixed" SU needle
"S" for a "swing" SU needle
"Z" for a "fixed" Zenith-Stromberg needle
"B" for a "biased" Zenith-Stromberg needle

The numeric value is the jet size in thou.

Cell D22
"Comments"

You can add a comment for the "test"
needle in the cell to the left of this
one. For all other needles, add the
comment to the "Comments" tab.

To view the "test" needle's comment,
click the comment's cell and view the
contents in the "Formula Bar" above
the spreadsheet frame if this is visible.
Alternatively, it can be viewed in the
"test" needles section at the top of the
"Comments" tab.

On the "Basic" tab, the comment for
the "test" needle will be displayed
when "Show Suggested" mode is in
operation.

Other needles which have comments
on the "Comments" tab are indicated
by a blob in this row. You can use
the "Lookup" feature on the
"Comments" tab to view them.

On the "Advanced" tab, the comment
will be displayed when the needle is
selected.

Cell A23
"Error/Warning Messages"

Size Mismatch Error:
Can apply to "NDL1", "NDL2" or "CONV" mode.
On "Advanced", the source needle's size
does not match the needles on this tab.

Index Missing (No2/Priority/Working Range):
The test needle does not include a value in
the field specified, or the "Pull-down" to
specify this field is empty.

Priority Index > Working Range:
The Priority Index should be less than or equal
to the Working Range value.

Duplicate Correlations:
A needle marked as '?' has exactly the same
correlation as the needle above it. Accordingly,
it will be very similar in specification, but may
actually be better than the one above it.

The spreadsheet is unable to locate the needle,
but it will be further to the right in the data grid
than the one above it. Search for it manually
and make a note for future reference.

If applicable, try adding more index point values
to the test needle.

Increase Tolerance Value:
No needles match the selection criteria.
Try increasing the tolerance value.

Decrease Tolerance Value:
More than five needles match the criteria.
Try reducing the tolerance value.

Cell A24
"Priority Index"

State an index which must be within tolerance
as well as the "Working Range" index.

The "Priority Index" should be less than or
equal to the "Working Range".

Row 23 shows the annular area at the "Priority
Index" for the needle in each column.

Row 24 shows the annular area at the "Priority
Index" for the "test" needle. Accordingly, this
value is the same for each column.

Cell A25
"Working Range"

This is usually the highest index for each carb
size which will affect the fuel metering.

Any indeces higher than this value are never
lifted out of the jet and so can be ignored.

Enter the Working Range index from the table
on the "Advanced" tab. Alternatively, you can
set this to a lower value and use it like an
extra "Priority Index".

The "Pull-down" can be used or the index
can be keyed manually.

Row 25 shows the annular area at the Working
Range index for the needle in each column.

Row 26 shows the annular area at the Working
Range index for the "test" needle. Accordingly,
this value is the same for each column.

WARNING:
The statistical correlation calculation will only
apply between index point 2 and whatever
value is set as the "Working Range". Because
of this, you should make sure that the
Working Range is higher than or equal to the
"Priority Index".

Cell A26
"Tolerance Percentage"

Select from a range of up to 20% using
the pull-down menu.

This uses the annular area in the jet.
The percentages used will therefore
match the percentage values shown when
comparing needles on the "Advanced" tab.

Both the "Priority Index" area and the
"Working Range" area must be within
+/- n% for a correlation to be calculated.

Needles outside this range will not be
suggested.

Cell A29
"Best Correlation/Perfect Match Found"

The closer to "1.000" the number is the better
the match is to the shape of the test needle.

"Perfect Match Found" will be displayed if the
test needle exactly matches all index points
from index 2 to the "Working Range" index.

For any other result, "Best Correlation" will be
displayed. Because the figures are only
shown to 3 decimal places, many figures
listed as "1.000" will have been rounded up.

Sometimes a better match can be obtained
by increasing the tolerance value a small
amount.

Cell A31
"Selected Needle Details"

The needle chosen for comparison
in cell "D1" is detailed here.

This can be:
The name of the "test" needle in cell "C1",
or, from the "Advanced" tab:

"NDL1" for "Needle 1"
"NDL2" for "Needle 2"
"CONV" for the "Jet Converter" needle.

The sizes of any needles imported from
the "Advanced" tab must match the size
of the needles on this tab, otherwise an
error will be reported.

Cell A32
"Suggest"

Only the top 5 closest matching needles will
be displayed here.

Display these needles on the "Basic" tab by
setting the "Show Suggested" option to "Yes"
and selecting the correct needle type.
