OK I have a question for discussion:

This Jag is exactly the same as mine but with about twice the mileage.

Why is it being scrapped?

Before the bump it must have been worth,what $20k?

I have no idea.... But I would be willing to take it from them and give them the scrap value for it

Parts cost more to replace than the "market value" so insurance pay out the owner market value then sell the car via auction to regain some of their loss, often these "repairable write offs" are bought by wreckers who dismantle the car. Most are bought by private buyers who repair with recycled parts and re register. It is the cost of new parts that send these cars to the crusher so to speak. As most insurance company's will only use new OEM parts because they to have offer a warranty on repairs.

It's probably a statutory write-off.

I watch the pickles websites fairly regularly, you'd be surprised at some of the cars that are satutory write-offs, from the pics they look like they just need a bumper, but they are a total loss, apparently.

I reckon that the insurers don't want to be faced with potentially expensive warranty claims after the repairs have been done, it seems to happen with "luxury" cars more than the run of the mill stuff.

BTW there's another X350 being wrecked in Melbourne at the moment, a green one, again from the pics it was hard to imagine why...

So a statutory write-off can't be re-registered right. Does that mean it has unrepairable damage?

Not necessarily unrepairable, i've seen a number of statutory write-offs that could easily be repaired, for a fraction of the cost to replace the vehicle.

Yes they can't be re-registered, and I think that's a major reason why some cars that aren't so bad are stat write-offs. I was told that it's because of re-birthing, especially for the exotic vehicles.

I remember seeing a ~2004 Lamborghini that was up for auction at pickles, not a mark on it but it had been flood "damaged", and it was a stat write-off. It probably started & drove fine, but it was off the road permanently....

Speaking of Lamborghini's, a guy down the road has two, Rego numbers "FOR FUN" & "4 FUN 2". "For fun" runs "L" plates some of the time. He also has a non descript convertable with "P" plate rego "FUN CAR"

Yes NSW no longer has repairable write offs to stop rebirthing.

I bought a Hyundai Excel from Pickles as a car for my kids to learn to drive around the paddock in. It still drove like a new car.

Paid 150 for the car plus $88 Pickles tax plus $100 to get it towed home.

It had front end damage that needed a bonnet LH headlight and front bumper support replacement plus a bit of straightening of the radiator support and minor repairs to the bumper cover and it would have been good as new. I drove it out of their yard and the towie drove it onto the truck.

There were other stat writeoffs there that looked easy to repair.

I had a talk to the Pickles staff and asked if the NSW stat write off laws had pushed the prices down and they said that they certainly had. The ACT registered repairable write offs do fetch more money at those auctions and a fair few commercial buyers from Sydney come down to buy them.
