Buy in Tassie and take to Vic
I am looking at very nice car down in Tassie and I live in Vic.
The car is registered until 23 July 2015.
The Reg transfer paper says my address has to be a Tas one.
It will have to come home with me on the ferry.
Now do I just feign ignorance , do all the paperwork and send the stamp duty as if I lived there and then swap it over to Vic reg in July with new RWC etc or will I have a problem putting it on the ferry or something.
when I swap over in July am I going to have to pay a new lot of Vic stamp duty?
Has anyone on here done this before?
pete

I have found best when buying interstate to call your insurance company and tell them you have the car and they will cover it. Drive the car home(buyer has 14 days to do transfer). Get a Safety Cert(RWC) in your state and go to Vic roads I assume in your case and surrender the Tas plates and remaining rego will be refunded to seller(up to you to negotiate that part in the sale price).
Register the car in your name, all done. Best to do it right straight up to save any insurance or main roads hassles.
EDIT: stamp duty only ever has to paid once by each owner, no matter how many times you change state or let the rego lapse and re-register.

Here is a link to the Vicroads page on the topic. Pretty much as Clarke described.

There is no issue with the ferry , they only care that you have a paid space.

Stamp duty is payable only when you first register the vehicle in your name and that will be Victoria.
You wouldn't be able to register in Tas unless you could prove you have a permanent residential address there.
