Windshield cleaning?
 

Ok so this isn't jag specific but... aside from large splotches I have many small scratches and such on my windshield (2004 x-type) and while it seems crystal clear in the daytime at night i get the star effect with oncoming headlights and when its raining at night the blotching foggy stuff really hinders visbility to where its getting to be more than annoying almost dangerous. Im hoping to be able to rectify this without buying a new windshield (since its not event related my insurance wont cover the replacement).

None of the scratches are deep and most all are not visible until at night.

Ok I'll stop going on and on...

Whats the best way to do a real deep cleaning to get the windshield as good as new as it can get?

I'm pretty sure that most professional windshield companies offer a windshield polishing/scratch removal service. Might work in your case. I'm guessing $100. Just a guess, though.

I've seen DIY polish/scratch removal kits. Never tried one. I suspect a gentle touch is required.

For *cleaning* I use the same polish that I use on my paint. It's very mild. I polish the glass every couple months. I'm often amazed at the road scum that comes off.....it's very thin, but it's there. I follow up with Rain-X.

joec, something that you might want to try is some Perfect-It III (stage 2) polishing compound and some 0000 steel wool. I know what you are thinking, no @#$%^ way am I putting steel wool to the windshield. Trust me, you take some of the polishing compound and then you use the steel wool to really work at the windshield. It will take out a lot of those scratches that you are talking about. I didn't believe it myself, but I gave it a try in a corner of a window that I didn't car around. I got a nice surprise.

Now, I will admit, the Perfect-It product is a little on the pricy side (sells local to me for around $50 for a quart bottle. But, a little goes a long way and after the windshield, the product works on the rest of the car (paint, chrome, headlights, wheels, etc). It will do wonders for your car. If you apply it to the paint, I recommend doing it by hand. If you have a buffer, it is possible using this stuff to burn through the paint on the edges of the car. After using it, you will find out that it doesn't take a lot of buffing to make it transform your car.

Thermo, Thanks! I didnt think of the 0000 steel wool.. nope that doesn't scare me, I use it on my guitar builds as well very often on finished and unfinished hard tone woods, didnt think of it for glass as well.
