Hi all you oil burners, ( myself included )....This section has been introduced at the request of ronbros and dervdave for the discussion of all things relating to driving / owning a diesel engined car.
To be fair, it was only a matter of time, as more and more deisel owners seem to be joining, as well as more and more from the UK / Europe.

So if you wanna discuss the torque or impressibe MPG achievable by your car, or anything relative, please post here.:)

what is the list of available diesel Jags?? old or new,anyone?

i have two diesel cars ,but not a Jag(yet)

Glad to see the diesel section getting some use and hopefully there'll be lots more posts and an active interest here. I'm thinking that dervdave and BuckMR2 should use their time / knowledge to help get this section off the ground

That's right about the carbon monoxide. No tetra-ethyl-lead in the old days either. Some soot then, but not now, that's been cleaned up. Even NOX is moderate now. And, like for like, the diesel will produce about HALF the CO2 that a petrol would. Look around in the UK or Europe, and it seems that half the cars on the road are diesel.

Come on over to France and I would hazzard that the % is even higher 60 to 70%

And diesel is significantly less expensive than petrol.

If you do come over in mid Spring you will see a carpet of yellow as the farmers turn over to oil seed for Bio-Diesel. Looks nice but seems to grow everywhere you don't want it.

i like that cost is lower for diesel fuel,
but for reasons unknown(or BS), diesel fuel costs more in USA,average 10-20% more,than gasoline(petrol) go-figure??.

oddly when i was a kid, diesel was 1/2 the cost of gasoline.

then along came the great world fuel shortage, mid 70s, and because diesel trucks delivered 75% of goods in usa , prices jumped higher than gas, and never came down.

as usual its all about the money.

ron , my diesels are an Opel 1.8L turbo coupe 1982,mpg US gal. around 42mpg.

and GMC truck 6.5L turbo 1995, diesel, maybe 18-20mpg on a good day!

and i now run the Opel-Isuzu on used &filtered veggie oil, it seems as tho it will run on anything filtered& blended, including petrol, used crankcase oil, peanut oil, soy oil, corn, kerosene lamp oil, JET engine FUELs, rapeseed oil, paint thinners,etc.

long as its filtered& blended with some regular diesel fuel and a proprietary catyilist , to reduce precipitation(seperation) , it seemms to run great,especially in hot temp days hotter the better,, but in cold temperatures, it is a little stubborn on cold starts, but smooths out and is fine all day, cost of used vegg oil is free, so yearly cost is very low,

and used engine drain oil is free, also noticed lately runs better on petrol drainings than diesel drainings.?? cant explain that but have no complaints, its all good.

about 2yrs now, no problems, change 1.8L oil around 3K-4K miles.

I am finding diesel is now a good 5 to 6 ppl more than petrol. I doubt I make any saving driving a diesel over a petrol now. But, it is in the lowest insurance group of 14 with the 2.5 petrol. It also has the lowest depreciation rate of all the S Types.

I got mine as it was the right price etc, the type of engine was incidental.

There are some garages now at 6ppl dearer than petrol but most in my vacinity are still only 2-3ppl dearer.Even at 6ppl its still more economical than any petrol variant.

Not only that but your car is worth more when selling, it will attract more interested buyers than a petrol, it has longer (mileage) service intervals.
On top of that the car has similar performance to the v6 petrol and unlike the petrol cars can be remapped to utilise a lot more power and torque than normally aspirated petrol cars as well as economy improvements.
I went from Newcastle to the .co.uk forum meet at Chesterfield and back in June and didnt hang about there or back and averaged 46.2mpg (thats UK mpg) averaging around 90mph back and getting stuck in the heaviest rain Ive seen in 25 yrs driving on the motorway (couldnt see 5 yds in front and cars all had fogs on) which wouldnt have helped mpg on the way there.My 3.0 petrol X Type would barely have seen 26-27mpg.
Ive just filled my XJ up.
Next time it will need to be filled will be approx the week leading up to Xmas

does it have an intercooler, and what type?

is it common rail FI system?

sounds like a great car,, are any computor remaps available?

what transmissions were available? overall vehicle specs.

gives us something to talk about also!
