S-Type Diesel intermittent Lack of Power
 

Hope someone can advise.

I have recently purchased a 2004 S-Type 2.7d Sport (the one with the exhausts bent down facing the road) with 161,000 miles on the clock.

I have an intermittent fault developing and would like some advice as to what may be wrong before I visit a dealer.

Symptoms are as follows:

Most of the time, having started the engine and accelerating away from stationary the car performs as it should with good power. However, sometimes the car holds back and wont accelerate at all, being lucky to reach 30mph. It feels similar to driving a car which has a speed limiter fitted and you try to go above the limit.

If I pull over and turn the engine off and turn on again the fault clears. At no time is there any fault code displayed.

If however, instead of doing the above procedure, I kick down the accelerator and hold the pedal there, after a delay of at least 5-6 seconds, acceleration will suddenly kick in but in the process smoke is seen to come out of the exhaust when normally there is none.

Today I also noticed that although the car started out ok, when I pulled away from traffic lights on the same journey the fault came back.

That is not a fault I have experienced and the lack of responses suggests it is rare. So all I can say is get a diagnostic check done.

Call it my suspicious nature, and I'm sure I'm probably wrong, but sounds like a restricted performance scenario almost.
Did you buy it privately?
I'm wondering if someone may have removed / disabled the CEL lightbulbs or similar practices as I've heard of.

Hi Jim, Sorry, I have just seen your reply. I am busy rust protecting the sills at present but once I have completed this I intend to book the car into Prestige Jaguar to get a full health check done. The fault is showing up more than it did or i am just more aware of it because I'm looking for it. I find I can always clear the fault by revving it above 3000 revs a few times or simply restarting the engine. When fully up to running temp there is no issue. I'm thinking E.G.R.valves?

I would have thought that if someone had removed dashboard bulbs the LCD display would still come up with a warning, which it is not.

Intend to have the car fully up and running for the Glenturret run in June.

I think your engine is used in the Disco as well. On a MY2004 you can block the EGR valves without any limp home and DTC problems. (The Disco guys do this all the time. The EGR system is known to cause problems) I guess you all know this! I am coming from a Freelander 2 forum, so I do not know too much about JAG's...

I had a (Almost) similar problem on another PSA engine some time back - a Peugeot 307 2L Diesel. It turned out to be the diesel filter... It was the last thing we thought about!

Thanks for your advice. Car is going in to Prestige Jaguar in a week or so, so hopefully they will find a fix. Their opinion is the EGR valves would throw up an error on the display which they are not so they are not so sure, possibly injector fault? Another friend of mine is suggesting fuel filter, so here goes. i'll update when I get it seen to.

Got the car back from Prestige Jaguar today. Both EGR valves replaced as they were so clogged up they wouldn't move and engine given full service. Car going beautifully now but sadly wallet considerably lighter but not half as bad as had I gone to main dealer. Prestige Jaguar staff very knowledgeable and first class service.

Sorry to hear that the EGR valves were the cause, more than a few £££ obviously, but as you say, much much cheaper than the dealers.

I was just in with them last week or so with my sons X type and again recently with mine for a 4 wheel alignment.

Had a similar problem I sprayed EGR cleaner through the air in.et and that cleared it

You should preform induction cleaning to stop the erg valves clogging again, this blog explains it well.
