Default Fuel Pump

Should I hear the fuel pump start to run when I turn the ignition to accessory? If I am, I don’t. My fuses look good (replaced 2) and the tank has all the electrical connections attached. Where should I start trouble shooting? I don’t think my engine is getting fuel. Fires up immediately with starting fluid, dies immediately once that’s gone. runs for about 3 seconds

If it's a Series III then the fuel pump only runs when the ignition is on.

What year and model? My 69 series 2 coupe, for example has an SU pump that clicks. Has yours ever been replaced? ,Did it ever work? Car ever run? Was it stored for a long time? You might want to give the pump a firm rap with a rubber mallet to see if the points are stuck. Then check the power to the pump. Check the wiring diagram to help locate fuse and circuit. Then see if other items on that circuit work. I don't know your year/model, so don't know what circuit that is, but others here will know.

it ran a few years ago. It’s been stored for 3 or so. I drained the tank, replaced the fuel filters, changed the oil. It appears I have compression and fire, but with it dying so quickly it seems I don’t have fuel. It is a 69 coupe. I don’t know what series offhand. How do you determine that? Thanks for the help. I’ll give it a good rap with a mallet on top and see if that does any good

etypefancierjr:

For your edification here’s a list of E-type series:

Series 1 = 1961-1967 (both 3.8 and 4.2 liter, six cylinders)
Series 1-1/2 = 1968 (4.2)
Series 2 = 1969-1970 (4.2)
Series 3 = 1971-1974 (5.3 liter V-12)

Your car being a 1969 is a Series 2, by definition.

Good luck with your fueling issue.

Default Fuel Pump Working!

Congrats and good news for sure!

If that is an OE (original to the car) pump, you may want to think about putting in a new one. There is an identical form factor SU that is all electronic, no points. It's not a hard job. Just take photos and notes, and label what came off where and you can do it. There is a YOUTUBE that explains the pump:

and here is one for replacing:

There will be those here who advocate rebuilding the old one, but after 53 years it doesn't owe you anything. Here is a link to the identical form factor, just solid state: I put this in my car about 10 years ago. Shop around at the regulars, but do buy the new washers!

I recently rebuilt the fuel pump on my V12 with only 25K miles and was very surprised how bad the points looked. I rebuilt my pump because I'm an originality nut but if you're more sane than I am (a low bar for sure) I would follow Valerie's good advice and replace your pump with a newer version without points, and it certainly sounds like you need a new pump. By the way, I needed a rebuild largely because ethanol in the fuel had eaten away at the pump diaphragms so it's only a matter of time until you'll need a new pump, if you aren't there already.
