Rusted floors
My floors are rusted-toast in my Series II. What’s involved with replacing them, costs etc., and how does it impact the interior elements such as vinyl, leather or other? |
If the floors are rusted enough to obviously need replacement, then the sills are also and the car is most likely structurally unsound.
Time for a ground-up. |
E Brand do you mean the floors or just the floor pans? Big diff. in answers.
|
You can find the floor pans on eBay from time to time. https://www.ebay.com/itm/0558-5995-J...item33ada4f1cc (pretty reasonable and I've bought from this guy a lot).
I got my set from Welsh: https://www.welshent.com/Sheet-Metal...7002&ps=12&p=2 (a tad more expensive). |
Rusted floor pans
Thanks for all your notes....yes it’s the floor pans which have rusted through each in one corner, probably where condensation pooled. Thanks for the lead, hopefully there’s material to weld to....how difficult a replacement job? |
If you have access to welder it should be pretty straight forward. depends on how much other rust damage you need to fix at the same time.

Rust grows and if visible will be beyond that point and need to cut back to good metal. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...9176abdda9.jpg
all new floors, transmission tunnel, https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...f4c7f39dd7.jpg Trial fit of new wing and sill. Doors finally got here so can do fitting and get ready to weld!! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...891246a1ef.jpg this OTS took some minor rear end damage that over the years rusted on through so entire bottom replaced. |
Kind of a drawn out thread, but a reasonable amount of useful info: LNRB Floor Pan Adventure
Best of luck with the radiation therapy on the metal cancer. Am also going through more of the same. |
Not sure why this is considered a drawn out thread......you all know rust is a critical issue with e-Types, and many thanks to those who have given me their case studies, referrals and guidance. I have not yet torn up the heavy rubber matting the previous owner had riveted to the floor to see excactly how much floor cancer there is, but while the pans are rusted are, the sills seem sound. Right now it’s in a mech. shop receiving new fuel tank and alum radiator.....so I can get the thing started. Once these systems are recommissioned I might then drive the car and bring it to a chassis master, when I could report to those who are interested, in bringing a 20 yr coupe that was parked (wet) and suffered greatly for it. Again Thanks! |
Not this one, the one he linked is the drawn out one.

Not sure why this is considered a drawn out thread..... I discovered rust under my rear seat. The first muffler is under there with a heat shield above it, then a layer of fiberglass insulation. Not a well thought through arrangement. Insulation gets wet, is then heated by muffler and rotted out the steel under the seat. Had it cut out, new steel fabricated and welded in a few nights worth of time. You would not be happy with my patch job in an E. Adequate for my common XJ6 daily driver as it was in a location that no one will ever see. |

Thanks, I go Barrat all the way. I gave them the jabbing screwdriver test....floor ar okay but seam where pans are rusted through. Hope there’s enough material to weld to....we’ll see, need a bodyman to confirm. |
