Sub Woofer
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone mounted a sub behind the gear stick and behind the panels where most people put the 2 small speakers? I thought it would be a good place to hide one to retain the original look but add an acoustic dynamic. If you have, what size/brand did you use and did you still have room for the stereo head unit. Thanks |
To be honest, I don't bother with music in the E Type. I love it in my other cars, but in the E I listen to the engine and concentrate more on the driving experience. Not sure quality music goes with the 60';s feel. Individual choice of course!

check out the space

Having worked on both my speaker setup as well as the radio unit, I'm not sure there would be room enough in that area to put anything else. Here's a link that shows a great photo of that area.
https://newhillgarage.com/2011/11/12...enter-console/ Once you fit the actual radio/receiver and mount speakers, it's a pretty tight fit between the speakers and the trans tunnel, as well as behind the radio/receiver and the firewall/bulkhead. This photo may give you an idea of what's available, at least for a S2 or later.. the grey carpet delineates the back end of the available space. |
Hi Valerie,
Many thanks for your reply. I'm familiar with the space as my car is completely stripped and ready for sandblasting, so I can see it's a little tight in there. My idea is to not put speakers back in that area but instead put the front speakers on the flat panels in front of the doors. What I was thinking of doing is leaving the speaker covers to keep the original look but put a slimline sub in the gap and hopefully fit the head unit just above it.. |

OK, I have a better understanding of your project! Here's a photo of the Marine speakers that I used in my E.
They are not as space consuming as the standard speaker. Looks like something really small in the panels in front of the doors... https://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?t=10260 Found these Crutchfields... square/Marine ???? https://www.crutchfield.com/S-ZCYjQi...a&gad_source=1 |
Thanks for the photos Valerie.
In your picture (not of the speakers) you can see where I was thinking of putting my speakers..just to the right of the bonnet latch hook there is an opening on the inside panel. I was thinking of angling out slightly and putting separates in or a combo speaker; it shouldn't impede on legroom much by the look of it. Let me know how those marine speakers go. They look appealing die to the thickness! Cheers Pete |

Here's a link to where I posted photos of the marine speaker install, scroll down to about Feb 20 or so, 11 days. According to the Owners manual link on that Cutchfield site, it looks like there are screws in the corners. The grille then, would probably snap over that. An audio install in an E is never going to sound like a modern car. For that matter, the sound system in my 2013 Golf (Bose) is way better than my 2017 F. There are numerous threads in the F forum about how owners have upgraded those systems.. In my E the marine speakers are fine. There is no soundproofing in the car, other than what the felts and carpet on the tunnel provide. I just put in something serviceable. For me, when I'm driving, I really just concentrate on watching out for nutcase drivers, the ones on their phones, or the ones sitting on my left trying to figure out what the E ( or the F) is. There are some great threads on the various e type and f type forums by owners who have really done a deep dive into creating a modern/upgraded sound system. |
Thanks Valerie, really appreciate your time and knowledge. I'll keep scrolling and see what people have done...
