Clay Bar......

Is it worth going through with this? My paint is in decent shape and very smooth as is.. Would it make a noticable difference is I used it

You may want to search/post this over in the detailing section for more responses. I just used one for the first time ever last weekend and took some pictures after the wash/dry and again after the clay:

I was surprised that using the clay was considerably easier than I anticipated and also surprised that it didn't clog-up rapidly with contaminants, given that I thought my finish was carrying quite a few. It did improve the appearance somewhat, but I wouldn't do it unless I was going to polish/wax afterward.

Clay baring your car is a GREAT experience that I highly recommend

If your paint is not bumpy in the first place its not necessary. I clay bar if there is tree sap stuck on my paint etc...its not necessary if your paint is smooth after waxing..

to test your paint to see if you want to clay bar is to do a baggy test...get a zip loc bag and put your hand inside and glide your hand over the paint. if the bag catches on the paint a clay bar will remove it.

clay barring can make a significant difference to your paints finish and general look of your car.

After a good wash n clean simply, very gently run your fingertips over your car's surface.

If it feels like a fine sandpaper it could do with some attention

I clay barred my entire Firebird this past summer. I thought the paint was in pretty good shape until I did a test area with the bar. I clayed one of my sail panels, then compared that to the rest of my paint. What I thought was smooth on the old paint felt like gravel in comparison. I couldn't believe how slick the clayed portion was. You do need to wax right after, though, because the clay bar takes everything off. I'd recommend you do a test spot to see if there is a difference. I used Mother's clay bar kit, just fyi.

Clay?

What is clay?...............Its a thing of the past!

For those that are familiar with the newer, high tech form of surface prep, clay has finally been put to rest...and thank god!

Have you seen or heard of the new Nanoskin Surface Prep Towels or Autoscrub pads?

you may think your paint is in good shape....but you'd be surprised what the clay bar will pick up.

give it a run, you wont have anything to lose

I have to agree with carzaddict, you would be surprised how much dirt comes out of it. Be sure to lubricate it enough while applying the clay.

There are enough brands you can use, i recommend Meguiar's or Autoglym. Goodluck! Be sure to post some photos! ;-)
