Hello everyone, i have a 2003 Jaguar XK8 4.2 liter and i am changing the timing chain. i noticed when putting it back together the left side of the VVT i am able to retard the intake side. i am unable to retard the right side intake, i did nothing different from the left side. i dont have the crankshaft chain connected and i am leaving the exhaust side a little loose and the intake about 20 foot pounds of torque to hold the bolt until i retard the vvt. My question is, do i need to retard the right side or is it just the left side that gets the retard? Thank you to everyone in advance for all your help.

For a few years my CD player would work for a while, then stop. I'd try cleaning it and the cassette after which it would work for a few days and then fail. Finally assuming I had nothing to lose, I decided to spray the hell out of its with WD40 while it was turned off. I stuck the nozzle into the loading slot and sprayed all around the inside for several seconds. I let it dry for a while, then reinserted the cassette. That was over a year ago and it has continued to work flawlessly since then, playing six CDs in rotation. And all the function buttons work. WD40 is harmless to electronics, so I don't think it can really do any damage. Hope this helps some members who have experienced the same problem.
I also replaced my front upper wishbone bushings, upper ball joints, sway bar end links and sway bar bushings. I have new tires and a fresh alignment. Now I hear a noise that sounds like something bouncing around in my trunk/boot, but there is nothing loose back there. I suspect something in the suspension. I’m open to suggestions. Thank you. 1997 XK8 convertible, LHD, non supercharged.

Hi all,

1999 XK8 4.0. I made a mistake during AC diagnostics — grounded Pin 1 of the AC compressor clutch relay socket with the engine running. Engine shut off immediately and won't restart.

What happened:

Engine Compartment Passenger Side Fuse 14 (10A) was blown — covers ignition coils relay, throttle motor relay, AC compressor clutch relay, HO2S heaters, EGR and EVAP

All other fuses good

Fuel pressure confirmed present

No spark — confirmed by pulling coil pack

What I've ruled out:

Fuel system — pressure confirmed

All fuses — checked with ohm meter

Interesting observations:

Ignition coil relay receiving correct signals from ECM but not switching — tried 3 relays

"Stability Control" warning on dash — new since the incident

Could the ABS/TCCM be sending a false fuel cut-off or ignition retard via CAN bus? Could the ECM be damaged? Could it be the immobilizer? Has anyone seen this before?

Any help appreciated — keen to sort this myself before going to a specialist.

Thanks

I loaded it, and the workshop manual into Claude and it is able to have a dialog regarding my issue. I am working on the A/C. I may start another post about that adventure but that is not the point of this post. It is just amazing what the tool will do and for free for now.

It can understand the circuits, the wire colors, give me suggestions on how to test my issue. Just blows my mind, and I am in the technology field....

Hello Everybody This morning, on my 2002 XKR 100th Anniversary, returning from a short drive, while going down the ramp to my garage, I heard a strange noise. Then the gearbox jerked when shifting from forward to reverse. At the same time, the indicator lights on the gear selector stopped illuminating, and the power steering became stiff. The dashboard displayed a yellow warning light and the message "Gearbox Fault." I turned the ignition off and then back on. The message disappeared, the gear indicator lights were working, and both forward and reverse gears were working fine. The steering was also lighter. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks for the advises.

Hi all!
A weird but seemingly known issue popped up on my 1996 XK8 Coupe:
The issue happens almost only when turning on the ignition (not starting the car) on a cold engine (even if hot outside).
After letting the car idling for 1 minute, cutting the ignition, and putting it on the ignition key position, the gearbox fault disappears.
It rarely happens when driving, it is possible but very unlikely. Once the engine is hot, the fault is very unlikely to reappear when turning the key to ignition.
I charged the battery and since the fault appears before cranking, I think the voltage is not the issue here.
I have tried moving and jiggling the J-Gate but it seems to work perfectly and I cannot reproduce the issue once the car is running with the fault cleared.

Could it be a bad connector inside the rotary switch, which actually connects when the temperature rises?
I have seen several DIY possible repairs for the switch, or people that can refurbish them, but I would like to be sure that the problem comes from it, and I don't know how to check that properly...
