Radar detector hard wire install using roof console wiring.

Hey all

Here are my install notes on how I installed an Escort MAX360 radar/laser detector in my 2018 F-Pace but you can use this for any two-wire radar install. I used the Escort Direct Wire SmartCord because I was going to hide the controller somewhere but you can use the Escort Direct Wire Power Cord and save $10. Amazon links are below.

Tools Needed:
Plastic pry tool or an old credit card.
Soldering iron and/or crimp connectors.
Clean towels/rags to cover the dashboard and center console.

Instructions

1. Remove the rearview mirror cover by gently prying around the sides near the top. It will eventually pop off so don't force it.

1. Rearview mirror cover.

2. Remove the rearview mirror by placing your left hand on the bottom of the mirror base (closest to the windshield) and with your right hand around the mirror post. You want to gently pull down with your right hand and wiggle the mirror towards the windshield, gently. GENTLY!!! There is a plug connected to control the mirror and I've read on many forums where people rip the mirror off and destroy it. Simple is best here as it comes off quickly with little effort. Disconnect the plug and place the mirror to the side.

3. Remove the upper module cover by prying around the top of it and it will come right off.

4. Disconnect the plug and place the cover to the side.

5. Unplug and remove the module by pressing the two black plastic tabs at the very top while pushing up towards the roof and pulling the module over the socket that it's sitting in.

6. Using a plastic pry tool or an old credit card, slide between the headliner and console at the arrows and gently pull down. I found it easier to have the sunglass holder open so you can pull from the inside. Since there are only two clips, it will pivot down on an angle, then slide it back towards the rear of the vehicle to remove it. Unplug both connectors and set it aside.

7. Take the console to a workbench so you can lay all the cabling nice and neat. The power/ground wires can be looped and zipped in the middle of the console. It's neater to run the radar power cable up the side and loop it around in the front of the console as pictured. Be sure to leave at least 12 inches so that you can snake the wire through the hole in the front of the headliner and down the windshield.

8. The gray plug on the right has the ignition (switched) power and ground. Power is yellow with a purple stripe (position 7) and the ground is black (position 10).

9. Since the wires are very small, I usually score the insulation with a razor knife, slice it down the middle and pick it off so that the wire doesn't get damaged. Once the wire is exposed, solder directly to the Smart Cord wires, or make a small whip with connectors so that you can remove it easier. Your call but I highly recommend using connectors for ease of install/removal. Tape/shrink wrap to ensure no shorts.

10. Take the console back to the vehicle so you can reinstall it. Run the radar power cord through the hole and connect the two gray plugs in their respective sockets. Connect your power and ground and or solder depending which you've decided to do and press the console back into the headliner.

11. Reinstall everything starting from step 3 down to step 1.

12. Mount the suction cup for the radar directly below the rearview mirror cover on the glass, secure and mount the radar to it. Plug in the power cable into the radar and turn on your ignition.

Final.

Enjoy!
