911 Carrera S Twin Turbo or F-Type R
 

With the cabrios coming in around $20K apart, and the Jag bringing 100 more hp and 100 more ft-lbs of torque at about the same weight, why do people choose the pricey 911? Aside from loyalty.

But I've neverbeen a fan of the relentlessly static 911 design, even when it was fresher in the 1960s. Even today, I still see Beetle DNA.

Maybe because they have a back seat for legless people?

Legless babies, maybe.

911s have long been the consummate daily driver exotic. So many have tried to best that recipe, Audi R8 (no storage), Aston Martin V8 Vantage (expensive service), Vette Z06 (cheap build and kinda redneck -I love 'em though) and certainly the F-Type.
I think the F-Type has come the closest to beat Porsche at their own game. Jaguar has the lineage and the F-Type is flat out gorgeous. Porsche has excellent dependability record, and a very long model run.
A couple years ago, when I was looking at the Z06, Vantage, 911 Carrera, and the R8, my wife texted me and said she saw the hottest car today, but wasn't sure what it was. When she described the tail lights, I knew it was an F-Type. I started researching more and more... and ended up here.
No regrets, for sure.

Drive them both back to back. For me it's the road feel, steering feedback and overall connectivity to the road. I love my "R" but could never give up my Cayman "S" as I have the best of both worlds IMHO......

I think the Jaguar is better looking, but for overall performance, the 911 all the way. It just does everything better than almost any car. At any price.

My son loves his 993 Turbo and GT3, but the outside world yawns at anything 911.
My wife gets more notice on her F-Pace.

I had a f-type r for a couple months and traded it for a 911 Carrera 4/s. The f-type was too uncomfortable. I'm 6'2" and there was just barely enough leg room and the accelerator was too close. My knee was up between the steering wheel and the console leaving too little room for my hand bringing the wheel around. The 911 is light years more comfortable. I love the small back seat as I can lean my seat back to a much more comfortable angle.
I bought the f-type because I was infatuated with the exhaust note, styling and the horsepower. I've never clocked either the f-type or the 4/S, but I think they are very close in performance. My wife has a F-type S and loves it but she is 5'3". The 911 has been around so long that Porsche just about has it down to perfection...and I like the iconic design. Trade in value of the 911 is superb whereas the f-type is like all Brit cars...terrible. Both cars turn heads. Someone asks my wife about her bright red F-Type every day, but on the other hand, people that I encounter twist their heads off looking at my 911. Maybe that is because it is an unusual deep purple color that seems to change colors in varying light.

I think most enthusiasts will continue to favor the 993 for many years to come. I don't look at other 911's the way I do 993's. That's a very special car and the pinnacle of the 911 design. It's the one Porsche I'd take over an F-Type, that and I guess I could settle for a 964 turbo. :)

I haven't driven a 911 in years, and I know Porsche is a master at cooking the gearing to maximize 0-60 performance. But I find it very hard to believe the 911 Turbo is competive overall at the same weight, but with 25% less hp and torque.

I think most Porsche owners have no idea what kind of a monster the F-Type V8 really is. I literally crush a local Hurican before I lighten up in mercy. The Hurican is a little stronger than the 911 Turbo S on hp/torque, and lighter, though neither are comparable to a V8 F-Type.

Clarify what you are asking about. The 911 turbo is a different beast than the 911 Carrera S, which is the comparison you started with. The 911 turbo will dog walk the F Type R all day in every category except looks.

Also and im no fan of the porsche, never give them a 2nd glance but they are at least 100kg-200kg lighter.

Right - but with that said, it's not just the Turbo we would need to worry about.... The new 992 Carrera S with sport chrono has a factory time of 3.3 for the 0-60, and Porsche is *always* conservative on those times.

Assuming your V8S is stock, then the Huracan wasn't even trying. All due respect to the V8S (and I have one), there is no way you would beat let alone "crush" a Huracan.

And as for the 911 Turbo (not the new turbo charged 911 Carrera S), similar - no chance

By the numbers, the Hurican is not competive with the F-Type. I can attest to pulling the same poor guy by at least 10 car lengths before I lightened up, twice.

The V8S is not much different than the R, if different at all. It dynos at 495 whp (not bhp) stock. I have a slight tune, but I wouldn't need it.

The thing that strands the Hurican off the line is its 110 ft-lb torque deficit requires 9000 rpm before it makes its (still lower) horsepower.

​​​​​​This is my V8S dyno at 540 whp, so 621 bhp (@15% to the powertrain) and 505 ft-lbs torque measured. The green line is bone stock at 498 to the wheels, or 572 stock bhp. Note the 95F ambient. These cars are very conservately rated, almost everyone reports consistent 3.3s to 60mph, not 4.2s or whatever nonsense the factory claims.

Looking at the video I posted the F Type R did the 1/4 mile in 11.7. Looking at the 1/4 mile times for the least powerful RWD Huracan it does it around 11.4 as per this linked video beating the F Type. To pull 10 car lengths on a car pushing 580bhp - the Huracan you raced must have been running on 5 cylinders

No way anyone should lose with 25% more torque made at 1/3rd the rpm. The numbers don't lie. Its not close, I've tested it. He turned off instead of accepting another red light.

See the dyno above, my S is making 620 bhp at 2/3rds the RPM with 25% more torque (572 stock with 20% more torque). And torque is really the only thing that really matters, his hp just indicates a rubberband redline.

A very low torque, very high rpm engine is not a smart thing to line up against a 505 ft-lb @ 2800rpm supercharged V8.

But 20% more torque, stock, with the same hp. And the V8S F-Type makes that hp 3000 rpm sooner. Still not a race.
