Another Side Skirts Removal Thread
 

Question:

has anyone here successfully removed their side skirts (and left them off) to achieve the sleeker look?


Background:

New member here. Hello! Just picked up a CPO 24,000 km v6s last week. I've been perusing this forum and others for a little while in advance of my purchase to gather info.

As the first of several tweaks and modifications I have planned, I'd like to remove the side skirts. I much prefer the sleeker look of the skirt-less builds.

As it happens, the car is currently at the dealer due to transmission issues (happened 2 days in, good start!). That's another topic, but as it was in the shop anyway, I asked them to remove the side skirts. They recommend against this, as "there are a bunch of mounting holes to hold it on", and "there will be a different textures, as well as different shapes for mounting plates. It will definitely be noticeable.".

Can anyone suggest a workaround?

I've attached a picture of my car, and a picture of a skirt-less f type (Google images). The latter is the look I'm going for.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations! Nice color combo (biased of course). It will be helpful for forum members to respond if you add the car info you already posted and the model year, along with any options or mods to you signature line. You can access that by selecting "User CP" in the top menu line above the forum thread then select "edit signature" to add this information to the bottom of each of your posts.

Ah, I thought that the vehicle info that I'd filled in when making the profile was the signature. My mistake. Fixed!

The general consensus of many forum members is that the body colored skirts are not flattering to the lines of the car, as you attest to yourself...
Since you have a black top, black pack trim, and black wheels, I would suggest you consider changing yours to gloss black skirts. They visually slim the entire body, and match your other trim at the same time.

The black Side skirts also coordinates to the black front splitter and black rear valance, so it forms an entirely cohesive "ground effects" package

Correction: after looking again, I see you have a white splitter in front, which probably means your rear valance is white as well. One of the later model year changes made by Jaguar that was not well thought out. The white ground effects pieces all the way around definitely make the F-Type appear like it has put on a few extra and unnecessary pounds. Change your Splitters, Skirts and Valance to black and you'll love the car even more.

Yes this is something I've considered in case removing the skirts altogether is not an option for some reason.

I'm surmising that the rocker panels from my build (with side skirts) are slightly different from the rocker panels from the earlier builds (without), and that they don't look the same in the absence of the skirts. Is this correct? Can anyone confirm?

With this in mind, I was also thinking about simply sourcing a pair of skirt-less rocker panels from an earlier build. This might take a bit of searching however.

Confirmed but it's not an earlier/later kind of thing. The rockers and skirts for the V6 S are completely different than the base or the V8.

Based on this image, it remains unclear to me why the dealership can't simply remove piece #8. They claim that there will be visible holes apparent to onlookers, but the diagram would seem to suggest otherwise.

Attached a picture without additional side skirts, so dismounting only will not work because of the 15 holes ;-)

It would now seem to come down to a question of covering up the rivet holes in an acceptable way, or replacing the rocker panel altogether with one that does not have the rivet holes to begin with (edit: the part numbers for skirt-less rocker panels are T2R10391 and T2R10392, for reference).

If anyone is removing the side skirts and wants to sell them to me, let me know. I'm debating installing them on my car.

I'd be interested to know what the solution was with regards to covering up the holes.

I was thinking of a precise application of a colour matched single sided adhesive (like the helicopter tape that's already on the rear of the rocker panel).

I have the same issue here (white skirt) and like the idea of going with gloss black. Has anyone tried painting them? Or, would it be better to just replace them with new gloss black skirts? I know from hand washing the car these skirts absorb a lot of wear and tear and painting might wear poorly.

Black wrap is your best bet as it will protect the sills from the gravel blasting. Cheap enough to redo every 3-5 years when the surface gets rough from the rocks.

Thanks, this does seem like a good option. However, this would appear to fall into the DIY artistic category, which I am not good at. So the question I have is "to black wrap portions of your car are you guys DIY, taking your car to a detailer, taking your car to a body shop, or other?"
