Default SVO Paint palate

Let's talk new colors, since the new online configurators are live (certainly to provide an entirely inaccurate reproduction of what the colors will actually look like).

What are your favorites?

I am most intrigued by balmoral blue, bosphorus grey, spectral racing red (most likely renamed IRR), and velocity blue.

We could have as much fun making up our own color names:
blasphemous blue, apocryphal grey, spastic red...

I'd like to see what their 'desire red' looks like in real life. Very, very dark in the configurator.

Indeed Dave. I wondered about that one as well. I'm thinking some kind a deep red wine color.

I like Balmoral Blue - obviously named after the Queen's estate in Scotland - if the Queen had an F-Type, it'd be Balmoral Blue I imagine. On the other hand, in the configurator at least, it looks a lot like Loire blue, which is a lot less $$$

Spectral Racing Red looks so bad in the configurator its impossible to say what it would look like in the flesh. Well, actually it looks like this, kinda reddish orange:

Velocity Blue has been used on the 575hp XJR and the Project 8 cars:

Madagascar Orange looks nice, like the discontinued Firesand, only more $$$!

They sure don't look expensive to me. As a matter of fact they look un-expensive.

Hello everyone,
I'm ordering an F-Type R, and I'm interested in Spectral Racing Red. It's an expensive option, but it looks amazing. Can anyone tell me if the SVO paints require special maintenance? Can they be repaired easily in case of an accident? Anything else you feel I should know?

Thanks!

Make sure you look at real life photos of that color on the Range Rover. It doesn't look anything like the configurator.

if you are ordering, I highly recommend seeing one in person. My car is “Silicon Silver” and the first few cars I saw online looked like a minor variant of typical (Rhodium, Indus, etc)... then I saw another pic on line and it looked more like bronze. So I drove a few hours to a dealer that had one and when I parked my rhodium silver car next to it it was drastically different. Something about this color that it can look like different colors in different lighting. I was happy I took the time to go see it in person, I really like it because it is uncommon (at least around here). YMMV

Only problem with spectral racing red (and most of the SVO colors) is that you'll likely never be able to see them in person. Dealers won't order them to sit on the lot.

Welcome to the forum, rmruby! In my experience, these types of paint don't require special maintenance unless your go with a matte finish.

Regarding paint repair, pearl/metallic paint can be difficult.

In one case, my wife's car sustained a sizable dent in a parking lot. Repair was at an insurance company authorized facility. Your eye wasn't immediately drawn to it but when light hit the area at certain angles it was visible even though the whole panel was repaired and repainted. Knowing where it was repaired and being car enthusiasts, our eyes were drawn to it every time. When trade-in time came the dealership inspector noticed before he even touched it with a paint meter.

In a second case, an ordered car came off or the trailer with paint damage. Having a strong relationship with the dealership, they called me to show me prior to sending it off (most will repair and not inform the customer as, if the damage is below a threshold it is legal to do so in many states in the U.S.). I got a credit for what it would cost them and used a well known custom paint shop in the area. Fantastic result but much more expensive.

Desire red is VERY dark, reddish brown in color, can't tell what color it is from 20' away it looks almost black. We ordered a full size Range Rover in that color, the owner loved it but not many thought it was worth the up-charge.

Who would even consider paying any extra money for a color such as Prugna? The dealership should be paying you to take the car off their hands!
