Default CA takes the fun out of car ownership

Got my DMV renewal notice on my 2015 F type, which is now a five year old car, and the renewal fees are $833 this year again (same as last year).. This is on top of the $6000 in sales tax I paid when buying it used 3 years ago. For a car I drive infrequently, this is absurd - so this year I opted to pay $22 for the planned non-operation of the vehicle. Guess I'll have to limit my driving to the gated complex where I live, and/or turn it into a track car for 12 months.

Can't wait to escape this state in a couple more years - my motto is stacking, then packing. Thinking Oregon, no sales tax, could get a different car every year!

Try owning a "classic everywhere except California" car like the 1978 Datsun 280Z that I have there - it's over 40 years old but still needs a smog check every other year, and the parts have to be CARB certified so they're more expensive and harder to find for no reason other than because they have the state's stamp of approval.
I'm looking to move it over to NY where I now live, but worried that it will get word of that and spontaneously turn into a pile of rust.

And lets not forget the highest gas tax in the country and the worse roads to go along with the high gas tax. The morons that voted for to keep the tax last election have no clue to Ca politics. Money is never spent on what they say they are spending it on. After 34 years I will be moving to South Carolina. Was a great place to be when I first moved here.

They really do. I'm getting so sick of the way things are being run around here. I've lived in the SF Bay Area all of my life, and it's changed so dramatically, and for the worse.

California is such a large state though, that sometimes I wonder if Los Angeles and Silicon Valley are basically subsidizing the rest of the state which is pretty damn near desolate. I've traveled enough of the US though, to know that every state has it's problems. Calfiornia's is monetary...

One of the nice surprises, when we moved to Oregon, was registering the cars. No smog check, no line at the DMV, and all 4 cars for 2 years for less than the F-Type alone for one. I understand it is a bit more hassle in Portland but in Bend it was really easy.

I've been in Los Angeles for 20 years now and I'm itching to get out of here as soon as possible.

I lived in SoCal for two years and couldn’t wait to get out. Worse than Gary Indiana, armpit of the country.

Everyone's definition of "bad" is completely subjective and where you're living (good vs bad area) within a region usually has to do with how much you like or dislike it.

If you're living here in SoCal, you're probably loving life:

If you're living here and only here, you do probably very much think SoCal sucks.

Haah. Sonoma County here, and I’m paying $1200 yearly for a ‘14 V6S. The registration is upwards of $500. In addition to the house tax, there are special assessments totaling $1000 in school bonds. This is not necessarily a bad thing but I would like an accounting of how the money is spent. The County can be wasteful. If moving, my biggest concern is proximity to health care since I’m an older person.

Consider the days are shorter in Oregon and the weather is lousy. Also, the earthquake risk is just as big if not worse. There are a couple BIG tectonic plates just waiting to give way.

After 15 yrs in San Diego I left for Southwest WA. Downtown Portland is 20 mins away (don't want to be any closer) and in WA NO STATE INCOME TAX. 13% of my gross pay fell to the bottom line after the move.
I miss SD but I think of that 13% return on my income every year and me thinks "rain ain't so bad after all"

Bend is actually pretty dry and sunny (high desert), they say around 340 days of sunshine a year but this year we fell well short of that. We are 88 today (a bit of a heatwave this week). Generally in the high 70s low 80s this time of year. We do get snow though. The tectonic plate and earthquake risk is west of us. (I'm looking forward to my future waterfront home...). I was a native Californian but just got sick of the traffic, lack of water, and drama.

If anyone is looking to move out of California to escape high registration costs, I definitely recommend you NOT move to Connecticut, where vehicles are subject to property tax just like a house. The tax is applied to 70% of the market value, so depending on the municipality you might get hit with something like $3500 a year on a $100K vehicle. That's on top of the actual registration and inspection fee...

And you wonder why there are so many Florida plates driving around in Connecticut.

Mine was $659 on a 2016 F Type R Im in the bay area SF CA. Not sure how yours was $833 that is strange.

But when I registered the Vehicle 2 years (I bought it in Reno) ago they over charged on the sales tax and registration by $3000. It took me a whole year to get that money back!!

Yes CA sucks, the CA DMV really suck and the roads in third world countries are way better than ours.

I moved here from OR 20 years ago and my tax is 13% more I just cant wait for this job to be over and then I'm out of here!!

I would check the DMV calculator for your car

I'd agree $833 is out of whack - my 2016 is only $567 here on the Central Coast. California is certainly not cheap .... but having lived in Texas, Maryland, and Oregon, I think you get what you pay for.

Thanks - intersting. I ran it and it would be $659 but for a $175 "transportation improvement fee" based upon LA county and my city. Still odd that no difference by year - they seem to plug a fixed value for the car that doesn't change by year. Well, regardless they get $22 this year. Charge stupid high tax, get less revenue. Eventually they may learn....

Thats what happened in 2012 when they added the millionaires state tax at 13%. Millionaires left the state and last audit they found they were getting less tax in than they did before. People can only take so much and the richer you are the better accountants you have

$175 "transportation improvement fee" LMAO OMG have you seen the roads in LA? 40 years of neglect. CA is the only state that consistently votes for higher taxes apparently the local's love to pay taxes here.

And CalTrans last audit showed 500 million a year of waste-full spending.

Ok enough I just fell off my soap box LOL

My 14S vert is same price as yours in Nev. When I moved here in '73 a Merc SL was $35!. One good thing we only get taxed the difference in price when trading in. I remember registrating friends cars at my home!

Come to Texas!
No state income tax, car registration fees are around $70 no matter the value, & lots of open roads...
