electric cars are a joke.
1) In the UK we currently do not have enough generating capacity frorthe current demand which will escalate when everyone has an electric car. We already py high electric use industries to shut down production during peak demand .
2) it only move the carbon footprint it doesn't fix it.

the real future is Hydrogen fuel cells

More and more i think the answer is yes. Except two major facts! 1. there is too much $$$$$$$$$$$ is made in fossil fuels for it to just go away in the next 10-20yrs, and 2. the electrical grid is at capacity and we use any free bit that is available..add the estimated 1 billion cars to the already at capacity grid?? nahhh. so we have a few years.

One article I read reckoned that when the grid was full of electric cars plugged in, the grid could suck power from the cars when demand was high. Not sure I'd be happy staring a long journey with an empty car because it had been sucked dry overnight!

I can fully recharge my F-Type with well over 300 miles of range in under 10 minutes - when an EV can match that ....

Indeed. Electric cars still have a long way to go. Perhaps if they had solar powered recharging capability.

I took the F Type Factory tour last month, very interesting!
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1jdwl3
They were in the middle of changing model years so no pictures were allowed.
The stamping molds cost 4 million pounds each. They outsource the front and rear plastic body panels. so model year changes are more cost effective when made to these panels.
They have no plans to electrify the F Type, they'll come out with a new model instead.
On the day I was there they were building 35 F Type's only - all presold factory orders.
World wide demand for F Types are down (tariffs, economy, Brexit, etc)
On the other hand they were building 220 F Pace and I Pace each day.
British Racing Green is still available.
Manual transmissions are still available,
For 16,000 pounds you can have your factory F Type painted any color you want. That is your color and no one else can have their factory ordered car painted your color. You can have future Jaguar builds painted "your" color at no additional charge.
They had a Yellow Special Project SVR F Type they said we will be seeing a lot of in the future...very secretive.

Whether the contract was slated to end or not, the plant itself was closing next year. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-48533790

The article's timeline seems to suggest that there are a lot of variables that would have still seen the plant closing even if JLR were to have renewed a contract.

I remember Clarkson in a review of the V12 Vantage from SIX years ago being all doom and gloom about it surely being the last gas powered Aston, and... it wasn't.

And even if it was, I don't see how that would stop anyone from collecting classics or future classics. I want awesome, innovative new stuff as much as I want an idiotic carbureted death machine from the 60s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm a huge fan of Keith Martin's Sports Car Market, and the collectors are definitely hand wringing. Many are thinning their herd slowly and cautiously.

a) boomers are dying. and the silver gen, obviously. I just lost a dear friend with an incredible collection: Ken and Joan Austin Private Car Collection
I really fear a glut in the market, and prices dropping, especially on American classics. His kids don't seem to have interest. Many collections aren't even driven properly, so when you do turn on a car, the gaskets fail and oil just pees out onto the floor. eek.

b) the new collectors have spoken, and they love 4WD, and especially Japanese cars that are just becoming US street legal. Supras and Skylines are like legends at cars and coffee.

c) another thing that will eventually ding the collector market is if & when cities, municipalities start prioritizing electric vehicles, or when the EV cross the threshold as "main" car, will gas become more taxed? Will insurance on gas vehicles go up? Then add autonomous vehicles, and I am assuming it will be prohibitively expensive for most people to afford insurance to self-drive. I know we're a few years out.

But I am watching with extreme interest, a guy with no garage and a desire to pick up some of my favorites. Here's my running list. You think I can nail all these in the next 10 years? LOL

And if the warming really starts accelerating, people will be too focused on putting out fires around their houses vs

My life has been manual transmissions only:
Datsun 200SX (I miss it)
1995 Wrangler (I have it)
2016 F-Type (don't miss it due to engine problems)
2019 F-Type (LOoooove it, and all the updates, it makes me think it's one of the last major incarnations of a perfect petrol vehicle, but I do hear there's a massive F-Type overhaul planned??)

So I say this as a happy gas guzzler.... the EV thing isn't that bad.

A) They're going to have to invent a sound, or let you pick your own ringtone, because they're dangerously silent for the visually impaired, or even just pedestrians not seeing or hearing it come up.

B) with global warming, the writing is certainly on the wall. For example, how long til international or national caps on flights begin? They're capping tourists in Santorini, Iceland, Venice, etc because of infrastructure stresses, waste, etc. Planes are like 1/6th of emissions. They'll have a target on their backs, and gas vehicle fleets will be next. Then it will all trickle down to enthusiasts. EV is the future. I assume my wife's next car will be one, but my sis just got one and man... the infrastructure not being there is a pain in the ***. Also, unless you're solar/wind like we are in the NorCal West coast, most grids are fueling your EV off coal, anyway.

C) watch some ludicrous mode drag race videos. The torque is something very, VERY special. Without the sounds we love, without the smells we love, you essentially just have to reframe your idea of a car, or transportation.

You're no longer in a car. You're in a vehicle, and that vehicle is basically a spaceship. If you pretend you are in a spaceship, I imagine it's not all that bad. And being halfway down the drag strip before the Challenger-guy even links up would be a hoot.

I say this as a dude that will likely never, ever own or drive one. I was sorta thinking it would be fine for wifey, but after my sister's challenges of finding charging and always being on the prowl to find a place to juice, it just seems annoying to me.

That Avanti's batteries are really well packaged. Wow.
I knew a guy out in Reno who was converting old Ranger trucks.
I'd thought of doing it to my Wrangler, but I really just want diesel. LOL

EDIT at bottom of thread here:

Wasn't Jaguar going back to an inline 6? I remember talk about it 2 years ago or so?
I know it's on the RR, but any chance that's the new F-Type overhaul?

Cheers, agree with all, save I can really see an electric car in my [wife's] future, we are expanding our PV setup at home so probably should get it to about 15kw system size and another 15kw of battery, so potentially we wouldnt pay for electricity at all for the car. I am not really a fan of the shape of the iPace. It isnt ugly, but it doesnt attract me, and that is why we have just bought a new XE which should take us another 3 or 4 years I suppose. I am really looking forward to seeing what the new XJ looks like, and Callum mentioned something "really special" coming up which has piqued my interest as well, but at the moment it is pretty hard looking past what I drive - steering, noise, gears, and looks first for me, speed really comes a distant fifth. The electrics lose gears, noise, handling, and looks, IMO.

When gas revenues dry up EV owners will have to be targeted - certainly in the UK the government raises a huge amount of tax from gas sales two-thirds of the price is tax!) so I bet they'll start taxing the electricity used to charge vehicles. They'll have to do something dramatic to prop up their finances when no-one is paying gas tax.
