F Type S vs. Maserati Hhibli

I'm curious to know if anyone's "run" a Maserati Ghibli SQ4? There's a guy at my golf club that just bout the Ghibli and, as a Maserati first time owner he's convinced that his Ferrari V8 tuned down to 402 HP is taking out F Types every time they dare him. I had a Maserati Grans port with the same v8. The car was not that quick until I installed "drive-by-wire" technology and it improved acceleration. Has anyone run a Ghibli? If so how did it fair. I know he thinks Maserati/Chrysler will embarrass my little f-type S. If there's someone who's run one of them let me know how you did. If feedback is positive, I'll race him, but will make it interesting by requesting a little wager. I hate new Maserati owners as they have a habit iof overselling it's performance and Italian pinache. Thanks folks, Raybo

It's most likely his Ghibli (as most Maseratis) would break down before the end of the race. I have a friend with a fully loaded Ghibli (every possible option almost a $100K car), it has been in the shop 29 days in the first 6 months. I was racing at Spring Mountain a couple of years ago, and a brand new Quattroporte blew its engine on the first lap. Go ahead and race him, he won't make it all the way through.

This is still a jaguar forum, correct? Let's not get carried away.

My money is on the Maserati. Even for a sedan, it's quick + AWD. Being turbo, it's pretty tunable too if he has got a tune. The Type S is fractionally slower on paper. Maserati does have more brand cachet than Jaguar and THAT V8 does sound great, but Jag simply make the better car in my opinion.

Well first of all he doesn't know what engine is in the car. The Ghibli has a turbo V6 - not a V8, and not a "detuned Ferrari engine"

ek993 is right! We have a standard '14 Ghibli with twin turbo 3.0 V6 at 345. Plenty fast for a sedan but not as fast as my F Type S V6. We were early adopters and had lots of updates and just stupid Italian stuff. My wife loves car for uniqueness and rareness. Have had no problems in last year as Maser finally caught up. Car has never been undrivable. The V6 is a Ferrari developed and built engine, the more powerfull version is 404 based on same engine. Supposedly Ferrari is developing a 550 version to be pared with an electric for the future. The V8 is offered in the QP and GT and was designed and built by Ferrari many years ago, now made by Maser.Remember Italian cars are made by guys who drink wine on their 2 hour lunch!

I've raced the Ghibli and Ghibli S with my F-Type in it's base tune (340 hp) and beat them. There's no way it would keep up with a S.

I also have a Quattroporte GTS with the 520 hp 3.8 V8 bi-turbo. My F-Type would have been on par with it when it had just an ECU tune. With the lower pulley and tune, the F-Type is much faster.

This is something to be proud of? Speaks volumes about Maserati.

The Ghibli S has 404bhp - not sure how a 340bhp base F Type would manage to beat it? Not as is the F Type is lightweight either!

Arne 02-16-2017 08:11 AM

The Ghibli S is some 200 kg heavier than the F-type S

DPelletier 02-16-2017 10:42 AM

According to google; they are very close with times in the high twelves, low 13's and trap speeds in the 105 - 110mph range. The Ghibli has more power but is heavier as Arne noted. If I had to place a bet, I'd go with a slight advantage to the F type V6S.

Criminy.. No need to race. Just give him a paper bag for that thing.

I don't know what Masarati is doing, but IMHO, those cars are Fugly. I thought Ford had built a bad SHO Fusion the first time I saw one from the side.

Someone must like them.. I see one on every corner these days. Maybe my taste in 4 door cars suck? :(

I was referring to post #7 - the poster was stating that he can beat the SQ4 in a base 340bho V6

bjg625 02-16-2017 07:30 PM

The ghibli is not a upgrade 300, which is based on a 90's e class merc. this is a troll story on the internet with no facts, started on maser forum by a bmw owner we finally banned. you should look a t a you tube of factory assembly.

bjg625 02-16-2017 07:39 PM

Dogbreath, all Italian cars are eccentric, it is part of their charm. Personally I prefer German cars but understand the appeal of Italians, except for Huracan, all have stories. My Maser dealer is also Ferrari and I here of weird stuff all the time and how long it takes to get fixed. One F12 had radio not go off after 1st drive home, then couldn't get back on. Eventually Ferrari sent new system and factory tech to correct, after 1 year wait for order and $450,000! I think big problem with Maser, Fiat , Dodge ,etc is the guy who runs the company, fights every recall and releases product before it's ready!Warning to new Alfa buyers.
