Default F-type weird lighting issue

Hi All, I am new here, hope that someone will be able to help and maybe descrubed weird issue with my F-Type lighting might be even somehow interesting 😀

I noted some time ago that my headlights are flashing/flickering. I noted it when driving during the day - I live in Europe and I have my headlights in daylight mode.

However the most weird thing I noted when I turned off my car in a dark garage. Head and tail lights started flickering for some time. It was with light switch in Auto mode. I think this flickering lasted for the time when the external lights are in 'follow me home mode' so when they are turned on automatically for some time after turning off the car.

What is very strange the headlights and tail lights are flashing in their own sequence, not all together.

Any ideas what is happening with my Cat? Please see the movie that I captured. Many thanks for all suggestions.

Our first recommendation for odd behavior is to hook up a battery charger or maintainer and completely charge the battery. And how old is the battery?

Can't help with a diagnosis.

But I'm told that my tail lamps flash when I flash the headlamps. Since I'm always in the driver's seat I haven't been able to verify if they really illuminate.

+++++++++++

I WILL verify that when headlamp switch is set to AUTO, the headlamps AND tail lamps stay on for that 15 - 30 seconds after power OFF. So they are controlled together in some way. CAN-BUS?

Thank you for the suggestion. The car was not used during last winter, and the battery was almost empty. I charged it fully about two weeks ago I did a couple of short city drives afterwards. I checked now again and.... the battery is almost empty again.... The battery is 5 years old, but since the car is not used in winter, maybe this caused accelarated aging. Probably I will replace the battery before taking further diagnosis.

However, it is strange because the engine starts without any problem and the car system does not signal any battery failure (I got such message when the battery was flat last time).

Will keep you posted after I replace the battery if this "light show" is over.

These cars are very sensitive to battery voltage, and can exhibit odd behavior without a low battery warning. And allowing the battery to go flat greatly reduces its lifetime. You should consider attaching a battery maintainer (CTEK, Battery Tender, etc) if you don’t drive it for an extended period. If that isn’t possible, the manual recommends removing the battery.

But don't close the trunk lid with the battery out!

Default this is the charger many of us use

Amazon Amazon

You can connect it with the 'alligator' clips or the rings. Several threads on the 'best' way to connect it. I used the rings, attached it to a 'sidebar' on the positive/red post on my battery and the black/negative to the ground post/bolt in the bottom of the trunk/boot. This was what my Jaguar tech recommended, but there are MANY opinions on how to connect it. The Ctek has settings for AGM battery and standard lead/acid battery. Car battery and motorcycle battery. The Ctek has a 2-piece lead wire, which allows you to separate the wall plug end from the battery connection end. While charging I have found that it is safe and non-damaging to run the wire out the trunk/boot over the soft weatherstrip seal and also close the lid. Like anything electrical, always check what's happening on a frequent basis to make sure everything is OK.

and yes, do replace the battery. The AGMs do not always have a life beyond 4-5 years, though there are some owners who report longer. Best to take the car out for a good long drive to make sure the battery gets the recharge it needs and prefers. The other thing that may be happening is a software update. My 2017's backup sensors started acting strangely and that was cured by an update.

Also make sure the warning triangle on the dashboard goes out ten minutes after the car is turned off. If it does not the battery is being drained. If that is the case you will need to do a reset and disconnect one of the battery terminals for a minute to correct the issue.

Many thanks for all repies and recommendations. Do you know, if battery change requires 'programming' in the car software - so needs to be done by Jaguar specialist, or this is regular battery replacement that any workshop can do? When I was replacing a battery in my Audi, some update in the software was required.

There are various recommendations on this forum about changing the battery.
Having recently changed 2 batteries on a different vehicle, I suggest getting a battery maintainer like the CTek before you begin.
If you connect the battery maintainer (or another small 12V battery) to the engine charging terminals, you can retain electronics settings etc while swapping out the main battery.

Default Battery replacement

Here's a whole thread:

You can also do your own searches for F questions... at the upper right of your screen, just below the Log In area, there is a search function.

Perfect timing! I have just collected my car fronm the garage. I was driving only for an hour or so after repair but it seems that the issue has been fixed. They exchanged main light switch. You can see replaced part on the attached picture.

I have been trying to resolve it for the past few days and ruled out most other potential causes(battery is good, fuses are all set etc) I think I have the same issue, can't really drive it at night with this. I can't see a picture but I also am just learning how to use this site so may be my issue. Only had the car a week and need to send it in now. Thanks for answering!

It may be that MMWPL can’t post a picture until he has posted at least 10 times.

Indeed I am not able to attach a picture. You can google for a part number 8w83-13335 and you should see it.

A fun fact about my repair is that I originally visited a dealer - they were not able to identify the cause of malfunction and offered software update only. Independent garage identified the issue with a light switch in 10 minutes...
