Feels like a real Gas Guzzler...

Traded in my 3rd Corvette Z51 C7 convertible for this 2017 F-type R convertible.
Having a blast with it.
Although both cars' gas tank holds the same 18.5 gals, & have similar EPA fuel economy of 15 city, hwy: 25/vette, 23/Ftype, & same 18 combined mpg.
But seems like the gas tank empties a lot quicker & I'm refilling at the gas pumps alot more often.
So what's most likely culprit?
1. F-type's 550 hp vs Vette's 460 hp. So guess I'm stomping on the gas a lot more often.
2. F-type's AWD vs Vette's rear-wheel drive. So I'm stomping on the gas a lot more often to try to get some tire sliipage.
3. F-type's 500% better & awesome exhaust note. So I'm at higher revs to hear the exhaust burble & brapping with the top down.
4. Faster acceleration with the F-type between lights to hit over 60 mph, just to see the rear wing deploy.
5. Putting more 50% miles on the F-type than the Vette b/c of the reasons above.
6 My wife actually drives the Jag a lot more often, since she won't drive the Vette.

So glad top-tier supreme unlead is only $2.59 today here in TX...

How to Hypermile: Driving Secrets That Max Out Your Petrol Mileage | Lifehacker UK

GRIN

As to your individual points:

1. With more power, wouldn't it take LESS throttle to avoid bumping into the car ahead of you? (I'm from NJ if you can't tell) :icon_verzsilly:

2. You WANT slippage? :icon_really:

3. Can't fault you here. I LOVE the sound, too. Luckily, the EPA's testers are deaf.

4. Here's a savings: flip the switch so that your rear wing is ALWAYS deployed.

5. :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:

6. My wife (the 'owner' of our Jag, it's HER CAR she keeps reminding me) never gets as good MPG as I do in all our cars. She accelerates harder, accelerates unnecessarily quickly up to the next traffic light without provocation, and isn't as smooth with the RH pedal.
(I love her anyway!) :icon_clapclap:

I've found my 550PS F-Type is more fuel-efficient than my previous 510PS XKR, and they're both driven the same way (like I stole 'em!). :D

Tommy Harshaw 11-13-2018 10:40 AM

My 2016 R has been more fuel efficient than my old 2011 V6 Mustang. I'm getting almost 22 mpg combined.

Man, we are getting screwed in CA. If I search and use my Safeway discount, I get the the price down to about $3.79. Most places are just over $4

Carbuff2 11-13-2018 11:04 AM

Wait until the UK folks chime in about the price of petrol...

NavyBlue 11-13-2018 11:11 AM

Oh, forgot one more item: Corvette shuts goes from V8 to V4 to shut down to 4 cylinders once on cruise control on the freeway to get 30+ mpg in Eco mode. Wished F-type does that in the coming years...

Robman25 11-13-2018 01:29 PM

Forget the UK $2.39 per LITRE here in NZ and thats for the lower octane (91we have 95, 98 and in some lucky places 100, don’t ask the price :( )

Well, you should pay a premium for living in a nice place ... :)
It's only £1.40ish a litre in the UK (95 is standard, 98 or 99 optional), BTW.

The Corvette LS engine is incredibly efficient - I've had four of them. I once took a 250 mile trip, nearly all interstate. and averaged 32 MPG in my 2012 Z06. I don't expect my F-type R to do nearly that well.

BTW, no shut down of 4 cylinders at light load in that car.

NavyBlue 11-14-2018 12:59 AM

Yep. I didn't expect the 550 hp F-type to beat the 460 Z51 Vette (which my best freeway run ave 31 mpg), but Wow, your 650 hp Z06 gets 32 mpg...?

I've heard rumor that once at speed & on cruise control on the freeway, the Vette shuts down One bank of 4 cylinders, to leave the other 4 to only need to produce 13 hp to keep it going.
Maybe the Z06 better aerodynamics gets better gas mileage...

I have managed a 32.5 mpg (US) on a 140 miles drive on country roads (not a fun drive, but lots of trafic and lots of speed cameras made it a sensible one….) with my MY15 R.

So you can get pretty decent mpg with the V8 if you want to - but I would say it's not something you do "on purpose". It's a lot more fun to see way lower mpg figures :icon_wink:

Dogbreath! 11-14-2018 08:52 AM

I've never gotten close to 30 mpg. My best is more like 22 mpg.

DJS 11-14-2018 10:20 AM

Worth mentioning again... everyone who actually measures their fuel economy finds that the F-type trip computer is 1-2mpg optimistic.

Probably more like 10 - 20% optimistic.

totally agree, cruise control on at 70mph is under 2000rpm in eighth gear , can give easily over 30mpg. UK

Urban commuting under 20mpg, approximately 18mpg.

Actually usually get mpg between these two extremes when driving in sporting manner (in region of 22mpg)

Like most cars mpg varies considerably depending on how it's driven.

TVS supercharger is much more efficient than earlier rootes types and has very low parasitic losses when off boost, direct fuel injection also benefits efficiency and hence can improve fuel consumption whilst being emissions friendly

I've heard rumors of this thing called miles per gallon. My brother with the Prius (and a 'vette) even tried to explain it once, but got nowhere with me or my other brother that drives a Tesla.

All I know is, there is little that can match Jag's SPG (smiles per gallon).

scm 11-14-2018 06:09 PM

When you drive a boring car the most interesting thing you can talk about is mpg. Obviously we don't have that problem. ;)

You must be talking about an automatic (A8) transmission in the Corvette....I had the M7, manual 7 speed, in my 2016 C7 Z06 and there was no 8 to 4 cylinder kick down. I do know it was available on earlier M7's but GM had valve train issues with it in the M7 Z06 and at least with my car (made in 1Q2016), it was discontinued. As far as MPG in the standard Corvette 6.4 L , naturally aspirated engine (no the Z06 engine), vs. the 5L supercharged engine in the Jaguar F type, neither of these engines could ever be confused with being economical under full throttle. At cruising speed, say 65-85 mph, the Jaguar should be better than the Corvette (smaller engine, no S/C effect, similar A8 gearing). Now you want to talk a gas hog....the Hellcat engine (707 HP) under full throttle will completely empty the 18.5 gallon Challenger fuel tank in 13 minutes....That is Thirsty!

Mjet 11-14-2018 07:10 PM

Are we really talking about getting good or better MPG in our "R"??? The lower my MPG the happier I am...... Let's get our priorities straight folks! Also the F-type looks a whole lot better than any new model transformer styled Corvette.
